Walking‘ Free and Easy’ by Mrs. Jimmie Gray
The Howard Starnes family of Sweeden, Kentucky are very enthusiastic about their horses and the horse business in general. OLD HICKORY’ S TRAVELER is their double-bred WILSON ALLEN stallion; he is a pretty bay six-year-old being trained by Fred Ray at Thompson Ranch, Edmonton, Ky. Shown extensively throughout Kentucky, he’ s in the money almost every time. Two of his best shows were at Edmonton and at Lebanon, Tennessee.
Daughter Ann has great fun showing SUNSET SHA DOW in pleasure classes. She’ s proud as punch of her blue ribbon won at Thompkinsville, Kentucky and her second-place tie at Edmonton.
The Starnes have a good prospect in a two-year-old black GO BOY’ S RAMBLER filly that will be put in training this fall.
When I talked with the Starnes family, they were all real excited about a new one they had just bought. SOCIETY SUN S is a two-year-old stallion, ready for trainer Fred Ray to start his schooling. Best wishes for many ribbons to these nice people’ s horses.
Ray J. Fogarty, Medina, Texas, is the only Tennessee Walking Horse breeder in his vicinity. His Command Hill Tennessee Walking Horse Farm should do much toward establishing our breed in the midst of Quarter Horse country. Stand at the farm is his stallion, SECRET COMMAND. He’ s by MIDNIGHT SE CRET and out of MIDNIGHT SUNBONNET M. Mr. Fogarty owns a total of fifteen head; of these, four are producing mares and another has been bred to RODGERS PERFECTION.
Congratulations to Edd Hill on a job well done with the great three-year-old mare, WINSTON’ S BLACK GAL. Owned jointly by Mr. Hill and P. O. Harrison, she sold late in the season for the top dollar. I saw her show for the first time as a two-year-old at the Fayetteville Lions Club show and mentioned her in my first article for VOICE. Edd showed her quite successfully throughout Middle Tennessee. New owners Mr. and Mrs. Porter Hickerson must be very proud of their mare’ s winning the blue ribbon in her class at the Celebration with George Livingston in the saddle.
John Keese recently put a top filly in training with Joe Byrom and is real pleased with her progress. Mr. Keese loves horses and has had his share of bad luck. Let’ s hope this filly makes the grade for him.
Jim and Ruby Vanzant enjoyed their first trip to the Montgomery Horse Show. They report that it is truly " Montgomery the Magnificent.” The Vanzants own two fine brood mares and, come spring, are looking forward to foals by SUN’ S CELEBRATION and GO BOY’ S SUNDUST.
Glen Stewart, Marshville, North Carolina, is the owner of PERFECTION’ S SON, a black six-year-old stallion by RODGERS PERFECTION out of an ADMIRAL GLEAVES mare. This is an exceptional animal, already a proven breeder and good enough for show
purposes.
Word from the J. W. Tolbert Stable, Waukesha, Wisconsin, is all good. Trainer Glynn Syler is working seven colts. Two he’ s especially high on: one is a filly by Mr. Tolbert’ s stallion, SUN’ S CREATOR, that is very much like her illustrious sire; the other is a black stud colt that Glynn compares to SHOTGUN, the good horse owned by Sheriff and Mrs. L. O. Ledford. In addition to the seven colts, six other horses are in training here. One of these is the top EBONY MASTERPIECE mare that belongs to the C. Pattons of Hale’ s Corner, Wisconsin. Glynn and the Tolberts are elated that SUN’ S CREATOR won his class at the Chicago show.
James Norris Neal enjoys working with his threeyear-old stallion. This one is black, a fine big horse that’ s showing lots of promise. Youngster Ronnie Neal is riding now and hopes to show some in the future.
I’ m looking forward to seeing Kenny Kerkeles, son of Tommy and Barbara Kerkeles, show his good pony next year.
Bill McPherson has a great-going aged stallion that he owns himself. JET’ S ALL AMERICAN is, as the name implies, black.
