The Walking Horse Trainers Association of America has a membership of over 300 professionals from coast to coast. It was formed in 1968 and has already established itself as an organization that is dedicated to the advancement of this great breed. Thus far the Trainers Association has been a guiding hand in working with the American Humane Association and the American Horse Shows Association regarding rules and regulations for exhibiting the Tennessee Walking Horse.
Brandon To Head Committee
Mr. Wallace Brandon, one of the most highly regarded professional trainers in the business, has been appointed chairman of the committee to handle the clinic and the show. In discussing the proposed program, Mr. Brandon stated, " This breed is just now beginning to become established as a show horse and it is up to the professional trainers to help newcomers learn the best ways to work with this horse. We have outlined a program for the clinic that will be the most comprehensive ever attempted. He pointed out that the clinic would be aimed at beginners and amateurs who are invited to bring their own horses to the grounds to get first-hand help from the top professionals. There is adequate stabling for 100 horses and more can be provided if necessary.
In describing the program, Mr. Vic Thompson, President of the Association, added, " Lectures and demonstrations will cover nearly every phase of Walking Horse activity. Selection of the mare and stallion for mating, their care, the care of the foal, halter breaking, feeding, hoof trimming, grooming, etc., will be a starter.” Training the young horse will include tail cutting and setting, tacking up, adjusting horse boots, preparing for the show ring.
The care of tack, shoeing, adjusting tail braces, principles of feeding, riding, and artificial insemination are other subjects to be covered. The all-Walking Horse Show is to be comprised of
18 classes with $ 5,500 prize money, of which $ 3,000 goes in the championship stake. This will be second
only to the $ 10,000 world championship prize at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in
Shelbyville. Juvenile, equitation, ladies, and pleasure horse classes will be included.
