Where the shoulder , back , and loin areas are involved , best results will be obtained by ( 1 ) first applying hot ( but do not scald ), steaming towels to the affected area , so as to stimulate natural circulation ; and ( 2 ) then following with an application of liniment , rubbed until dry .
Where a " body wash and brace ” is desired , use the liniment according to the manufacturer ’ s directions . Such a brace may be used as a leg and body wash after workouts , to relieve fatigue and overexertion and prevent soreness . Sponge generously over the horse ’ s body and legs .

Liniment for the Horse
A good liniment , properly used , will hasten and assist nature in returning an injured part to normal and relieve fatigue , overexertion and soreness .
Exercise and work cause greatly increased need for oxygen , carbohydrates , and other nutrients of muscular tissues . When a muscle contracts , certain mechanical , electrical , chemical , and thermal changes take place . It has been shown that during prolonged hard work the expenditure of energy may be eight times greater than during rest ; and during very intense muscular use , such as racing , horses may expend 100 times more energy than at rest . Such activity cannot be long maintained because of the onset of fatigue . Fatigue is produced when wastes accumulate faster than they can be removed by the circulation ; and , unless the condition is rectified , aches , pains , and soreness follow . Thus it is imperative that the circulation of the blood be increased in proportion to the demands of the muscle for energy , food , and removal of waste materials . The application of massage , heat , and counterirritants are methods of providing muscles ( and tendons , ligaments , and skin ) with better blood circulation .
Liniment is an astringent . Its use , along with massage , stimulates circulation , assists the body in removing waste products of muscle metabolism , and hastens nature in returning an injured part to normal .
The use of liniment is recommended for the following conditions : lameness , stiffness , soreness , strained tendons , sore shins , certain types of arthritis , and swellings , bumps , and bruises . It hastens recovery time and helps to prevent every-day injuries from turning into serious problems .
Also , liniment may be used as a body wash or brace after strenuous workouts or transportation , especially on the horse ’ s legs , to relieve fatigue and overexertion and prevent soreness .
Liniment should be applied ( pour-on or dab ) to the affected area at full strength , except when used as a body wash and brace . Then , the tissue should be massaged vigorously for 3 to 5 minutes to stimulate circulation , and the animal should be allowed to rest . Repeat treatment every 3 to 4 hours until relief is obtained , and as necessary thereafter .
