At Montgomery ACE proved once again the kind of horse he is— a champion. Despite his lack of training and the rather unfavorable conditions surrounding his showing, ACE and Wink defeated one of the best fields of open contenders ever to appear at the Southern Championship or anywhere else, for that matter. He did it in the preliminary class and he did it in the stake class— a stake class that had one of the most demanding workouts seen in years... and rember, ACE had not been worked for two months!
Montgomery ended a long show season for Wink and ACE, a show season that began seven months and ten shows earlier. It all started at Fayetteville, Tennessee in April with a blue ribbon and continued with three more blues leading up to the Celebration. Following the Celebration, there were four more shows and three more blues— three blues in a row.
But ACE is used to long, tough show seasons. As Wink said, " We sold him as a show horse to Mr. Rollins, and we have shown him.” In the past three seasons ACE and Wink have shown 29 times, winning 24 blue ribbons. Wink also showed ACE twice as a two-year-old, winning one blue at Jackson, Mississippi. This brings his career records to 31 shows and 25 victories under Wink Groover.
