MOBILE CHAMPIONS - Jack Moorman and LIVING LEGEND receive ihe blue ribbon and silver following iheir victory at the recent Mobile Deep South Horse Show. Jack is very confident in this horse and will be out to win the championship in the three-year-old division next year. TIME RECORD. CAESAR’S GHOST, SUNBEAM’S PRODUCER. MIGHTY SUNBEAM, APRIL LOVE, PRIDE OF SPRING. SPUR’S COMMANDER and SUNS GREAT SOCIETY give some indication of the type of horse that Jack trains. TIME RECORD was defeated only once, and that was by the great HONEY GOLD at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. CAESAR'S GHOST was a two-time South west Circuit champion, and SUNBEAM’S PRODUCER and MIGHTY SUNBEAM were both started by Jack. PRIDE OF SPRING was to become a World Champion Amateur Horse with Gayden Schrock of Poplarville, Mississippi riding. Jack trained APRIL LOVE until she was a four-year-old, when he sold her for Ryan Chevrolet Company. Two other top horses that Jack has had for Jerome Ryan were SPUR’S COMMANDER and SUN’S GREAT SOCIETY. COMMANDER retired Southwest Circuit trophies at Beaumont, Shreveport and Houston. GREAT SOCIETY’S career was cut short when he died last year following the Shreveport show. All of these "name" horses achieved great success, but Jack has one now that he thinks can be the best he has ever ridden. LIVING LEGEND, owned by Jim my Lackey’s Whiteway Farms, is the greatest young horse Jack has ever trained. He is a big, powerful colt, and is getting better each week. Since the Cele bration he as won the Two-Year-Old Championship at the Mobile show and tied reserve to the reigning Two- Year-Old World Champion at Baton Rouge. He appears headed for a great season next year and Jack is ex tremely optimistic about 1970. This colt was ready for the 1969 Celebration but suffered a foot injury prior to the show and could not compete at top efficiency. In the stallion preliminary, the colt was tied fifth and Jack had to be excused in 26 the championship after making a brave bid to show despite this injury. Besides being recognized as a top-flight trainer of horses, Jack has earned a respected reputation as a judge. He has judges most of the major shows in the country, including the Celebration in 1966, and he is in great demand every year. Jack’s approach to judging shows explains his suc cess. "I like to judge a show where there is top stock and plenty of competition. My approach is to let the best horse win in the ring, where you’re supposed to win.’’ It is this approach that enables Jack to attract the top shows to judge. Jack limits his judging to twelve or fourteen shows a year, and estimates that he is forced to turn down about twice that many. The old saying goes, "Behind every successful man stands a woman.’’ Jack has one standing behind him. Carol Moorman and Jack were married February 6, 1958. She follows Jack’s horse activity closely and is quite often with him at the shows. Jack and Carol make their home at Whiteway Farms in Forest. Mike, Jack’s stepson, is a sophomore at the Univer sity of Mississippi, and although he has not developed an interest in horses, he is a fine athlete in his own right. Mike plays golf at the University. The future for a talented golfer as a professional is bright and it is surely a lot easier than riding horses from dawn to dark. Jack Moorman is a true credit to the Walking Horse industry and to the ranks of the professional trainers. He is a splendid example for younger people, and his horses are always presentable and in top condition. He has proven that the proverbial talker of the sports world, Chicago Cubs’ manager Leo Durocher, was off base when he said, "Nice guys finish last.” Ml?
