All summer we taught ourselves to ride, and had fun. Then, in October, we found that we could join the 4-H Club. Our Club has riding sessions almost every Saturday just a few blocks from our stables. Our leader, Mrs. Dolores Hatch, insists that we learn about our horses and how to take care of them, so we have monthly meetings at her house to learn care of horses, feeding, how to take care of our saddles, bridles, etc. Mrs. Hatch’ s daughter Pam, a champion in her own right, comes to our riding sessions and teaches us the proper way to ride, how they expect us to perform at shows, etc. All of this is valuable information to those of us who haven’ t had professional training.
Naturally, the shows are the most fun. Having been in the Club only 5 months, I have only been in two and didn’ t even place, but I am not going to give up. Every day I work with LADY and she is getting better and better. She is the only Tennessee Walker that we know of in any of the local clubs. We have some tough competition- Quarterhorses by the dozens!
Speaking of competition, nothing can be much tougher than presenting a demonstration on some subject pertaining to horses to highly qualified judges. I gave mine on " The Tennessee Walking Horse” and was one of the ones chosen from my club to go to County but was defeated there. I wasn’ t too well prepared for some of the questions they asked me but next year I’ m going to do a better job, as there are some mighty nice people in Arizona who own Tennessee Walking Horses and they have offered to give me some assistance and advice.
Eleven months have passed since we bought our first horse and it is just as exciting now as it was then. While we now have three mares and four colts to work with, I still prefer the Tennessee Walker, and LADY and I will " Walk On.”
