IT HAPPENED AT THE CELEBRATION
So much takes place during the ten days of the Celebration that it is almost impossible to keep up with all the details about horses , people and events . We thought that it would be helpful , however , if we presented an article containing the highlights of the news as we received it on the showgrounds .
RUSSELL PATE STABLES — While at the Celebration we learned that Russell Pate , who has been training in Rossville , Tennessee for the past several years , has recently completed a new show stable in that same vicinity . His new facility contains all the modern conveniences for the care and training of top show horses and he invites all his customers and
friends to visit him at his new location . The new stable has 28 stalls and is located on a forty-acre
spread in Rossville . Russell again carried home some top ribbons this year including the blue in the Class B Two-Year-Old Walking Stallions . He rode MISTER REE for Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics . Congratulations , Russell !
McDuffie assists with harlinsdale sale - We talked with Mr . Hunter McDuffie , professional
auctioneer from Camden , Alabama , who assisted with the auctioneering duties at the annual Harlinsdale Sale this year . This was the first year that Harlinsdale had enlisted the help of two auctioneers , and the way things were moving during the three days of the auction , selling 150 head , it was to their advantage to have two good men . Hunter stated that he would like to get more Walking Horse auctions and would be glad to discuss this with anyone who is interested .
BRANTLEY STABLES FEATURE TWIN COLTS - A highlight of the Celebration for a lot of people was a visit to the stables of J . French Brantley on the show grounds . They had a display of news items from yesteryear and also were mighty proud of twin colts by SUN ’ S DELIGHT . Both fillies and both black , the twins were treated to a cut-out partition between two stalls that enabled them to romp and play with plenty of room . Charlie Brantley was kind enough to get them out for us ( see picture elsewhere in this issue )
and exclaimed that they were healthy and strong with a great future . We will keep our readers informed of the activity of these two fine colts .
COPY ’ S RECORD SELLS TWICE IN ONE WEEK — Trainer Dude Crowder had to go some to keep up with the sales involving his top two-year-old filly , COPY ’ S RECORD . This is the filly that topped a great class to win the Columbia show and tied sixth in the Celebration . Considered by many to be one of the truly top mares in years , it took a strong five-figure dollar for owner W . H . Medlin to part with her . She was purchased by Mr . Charlie Waters early in the week and he later sold her at quite a handsome profit to Barnwell Stables of Shreveport , Louisiana . Trainer Bill Hutson , who made the purchase for the Barnwells , said that he had been looking for this mare for three or four years . ( See picture elsewhere in this issue .) We are sure that we will hear more about COPY ’ S RECORD later .
ACE ’ S SENSATION CREATES SENSATION - As if his three sterling performances during the week were not enough , ACE ’ S SENSATION , the remarkable 1968 World ’ s Champion Junior Walking Horse , sold for a price reported to be in six figures during the latter days of the Celebration . Trainer Wink Groover won the Junior Stud Class and came back strong to take the Championship . Several hours before the Grand Championship Stake on Saturday night , in which SEN SATION tied third , it is reported that Dr . C . L . Sexton purchased the horse only to re-sell him shortly to Rollins , Incorporated of Atlanta , Georgia . Mr . Groover had to go " running walk ” to keep up with " what was sold to whom for how much and from whence cometh his commissions .” The horse will continue to be trained at Groover Stables but will be officially owned by Sugarloaf Farms , a subsidiary of Rollins , Inc ., owned by Mr . Randall Rollins . The trainer at Sugarloaf is Mr . Tommy Howell .
STORK VISITS CHERRY FAMILY - Right before Bob Cherry entered the ring on one of his many fine Celebration contenders he paused long enough to tell us about his Celebration baby - a girl weighing six
pounds , IOV2 ounces , which had been born in Centerville the night before . Both the baby and his wife
Faye are doing fine . This is the first time that Faye has missed the Celebration when Bob was showing and we understand that she was somewhat upset at missing the show . First things first , Mrs . Cherry ! We would like to point out that any similarity between this incident and that which occurred in the Lonny Barnes family is purely coincidental .
ORIENTAL ENTHUSIAST VISITS CELEBRATION — We were very pleased to meet Mr . Sid Mon Wai
from Seattle , Washington at the Celebration . Sid , the owner of nine registered Walking Horses including
two show horses , had struck up a friendship with Ed Simpson of Chattanooga , and Ed was making sure
that he got the " Cook ’ s tour ” while in Middle Tennessee . Sid was particularly interested in the background
of WA MOO-LANG , the World ’ s Champion Two-Year- Old ( now named JUDGES ’ CHOICE ) and how she got her name . If you are ever in Seattle , go to the Black Stallion Restuarant ... I guarantee that owner Sid Mon Wai will be glad to see you ( see picture ).
BERMUDA WALKING HORSE LOVERS ATTEND BIG SHOW — We found out where some Bermudans
go on their vacations : they go to the Celebration ! Bill Ray and Bill Madeiras were here with their good friend , Fred Black of Broadway , Virginia , whom they have known for some time . In discussing their Walking Horse activity we learned that there are about twenty registered horses of our breed on the island . It is always interesting to know that the VOICE figures prominently in the business and it seems that through your magazine these men learned of the breed . With Ralph Terciera , whom you have read about , these men purchased Tennessee Walking Horses from Fred Phillips of Shelbyville , Tennessee . We do get around !
BOBO AND WATERS FORM PARTNERSHIP ON YEARLING SALE — While at the Celebration we received word that Mr . C . A . Bobo and Mr . Charlie
YVaters plan to start a Yearling Colt Sale next year . Current plans call for the sale to last two days , probably the last two days of the Celebration , and to be held at the Bobo farm in Shelbyville . Air . Bobo said
