The Third Annual Spring Mid-West Sale was held
this year on a beautiful sunny day — much better
weather than this sale has experienced before. The
auction was again set up in front of Red Bridge Sta
bles. We found that the fire last year did extensive
damage but, being a T-shaped building, only the long
back section burned, leaving the front stables for
stalls and the sale. Under the red-and-white striped
tent, auctioneer Eddie Bryant started the sale and
kept the 65 entries moving in a rapid pace. Johnny
Jones was the capable ringman who traveled from
Tennessee with Eddie, and Bill Halbert and Max At
kinson were the two ringmen who aided the sale.
Trainer Don Bolinger from California, Missouri hand
led or rode most of the stock in the ring.
Bidding began and continued throughout the entire
sale with a keen interest in top quality stock, con
signed from many different stables. There were only
12 horses consigned by Red Bridge Stables. Many of
these were 1967 foals, sired by MIDNIGHT SECRET.
Also included from Red Bridge was MY TENNESSEE
HONEY, who has placed in several recent shows. The
76
price bid on this mare was one of the top of the sale,
but a NO SALE was entered. EBONY’S WHIRLWIND,
sired by EBONY MASTERPIECE, sold for $5,700 to
i lr. V. J. Whithaus, California, Mo. Going through the
0ne of the toP brood mares, SWEET SUN-

• ™be,sa*e was well-organized and each of the approx-
1,000 persons in attendance seemed to enjoy
e day. One of the special highlights was an im
promptu speech by Dr. Kenneth McFarland of Topeka,
Kansas. He and his wife, along with Kay, the well-
, j er wbo at one time was the owner and rider
oi world Champion MIDNIGHT SECRET, attended
the sale. Dr. McFarland is one of the leading after-
mner speakers in the country and, after hearing his
rie remarks, one can well understand how he at
tained his nationwide reputation.
One of the most pleasing aspects of this sale was
number of buyers and consigners from the
Mid-West area. This was the prime goal of this sale —
to open a new market between Tennessee and the
v\est Coast. This year seems to have proven that the
