The West Coast again brings a new kind of competition to the Walking Horse world. Trail horses of all breeds will converge on Sacramento on May 19. The Capitol Noddin’ Horse Juniors particularly invite Walking Horses to compete in the various divisions. They will be competing among all breeds for division awards. Numerous local, county, family, team and other awards will be made. Known as the American River Trail Horse Rally, the rides vary from the fortv-miles-within-seven-hours riding time to five-miles-within-one-hour. The forty-mile section is sanctioned by both the North American Trail Ride Conference and the California State Horsemen. This section has heavyweight, lightweight and junior divisions. It is the first sanctioned ride in the valley or Sierras. Last fall the Juniors held their first rally and we are happy to report that the ride veterinarians and judges found the Walking Horses among the winners. Thelma Cromwell, who has been riding the trail for years, entered the twenty-five-mile ride for fun. Having never ridden her sixteen-year-old Walking Horse in any kind of competition, she was surprised to learn that she had won the event in five hours’ riding time and with it the high point Tennessee Walking Horse trophy. Mrs. Cromwell is well-known to horsemen in all breeds, for her husband originated the famous
Sacramento County Sheriffs Posse which has won top honors in parade units throughout the nation.
Doris McClelland has her STATELY’ S THUNDER home from training for awhile in order to breed her two WILSON ALLEN mares to him. He is out of her STATELY’ S DUO SUE, twin to STATELY’ S DUO SUN, the black gelding she rides in the drills with the Sacramento County Sheriffs Ladies Mounted Patrol.
Dick and Sue Leamon are moving MAJOR’ S FURY R and MANDY’ S FANCY and themselves into their ranch at Wolff, California.
Virginia Lamb has CHEYENNE THUNDERathome and expects to be riding him, although probably not to show. Some mares will be bred to him, now that he has recovered from a leg injury of last spring.
Thelma Smith and Blue Mountain Ranch did well in Southern California( Indio). She won the ladies class with SILVER MAKER and the amateur class with
JOE DIAMOND. Johnny Gunn took the stake with JOE DIAMOND and Jim Landers took the Junior Stake with EBONY’ S SHASTA BREEZE.
San Jose was represented at the Midwinter Charity Show in Sacramento— Debbie Ingraham won the Amateur class with her consistent KID AWAY, with brother Pat coming in second.
