ALABAMA WALKING ON by Gail B. Chambers Box 14 Morris, Alabama My column this month will be devoted exclusively to the Mobile area, thanks to a nice long letter from Ty Irby. Ty tells me he is the fifteen-year-old manager and trainer at Irby Stables, owned by his veterinarian father, Dr. L. E. Irby. HOBO JOE P is their top breeding stud. By MIDNIGHT SUN, he was trained and shown by Sam Paschal $s a two-year-old, but received a permanent injury and has not been shown since that time. In the two-vear-old division, the Irbys have two studs, HOBO’S BLACK MAGIC and SUN’S GYPSY HOBO. Their three fillies include HOBO’S APRIL FOOL, MISS SCOOTER and MISS LURLEEN, with the latter being in training with Jerry Woodall in Laurel, Mississippi. W. J. Brown of Mobile has his bay two- year-old, PRIDE’S MERRY MAN, in training with the Irbys. Two nice three-vear-old mares owned by the Irbys are SCOOTER’S BOOTS and FAIR LADY MAN. In the four-year-old classes they will have HOBO’S EASTER BONNET. Several good horses for the age classes are GO BOY’S WHITE STAR, STORMY’S OLD BELLE, COPPER NODDER’S FLASH and SPUR’S GO WEST, all owned by Irby Stables. In the amateur classes. W. J. Brown will be showing hs PRIDE’S FANCY C.. a roan mare. FREDDIE THE FREELOAD ER is a black walking pony owned by R. B. Jeffries of Citronelle. The stake horse from Irby Stables is a black stud, SUN’S MR. PICK, owned by M. C. Farmer and Dr. L. E. Irby. The stables of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Ellis sounds like a beautiful place. Mr. Ellis has high hopes for his junior gelding, CASTRO’S RED CLOUD. They also have a mare, GO BOY’S FLIRT, that is in foal to SPURS MR. PICK. Roy Mitchell has his black mare, GO BOY’S DIA MOND LIL, in perfect shape for the junior classes. Mr. Mitchell also has broodmares and young horses. The Weaver and Morris Farms, owned by H. D. Weaver and J. H. Morris, have a couple of horses ready for the ring. Patty Morris will be showing her black gelding, SON OF IMPALA. EBONY’S DIA MOND HEAD is their four-year-old stud. At Lakeview Stables is MIDNIGHTS GRAND SON, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ellsberry. This is a two- year-old black stud. SUN’S CINDERELLA is a nice mare owned by Mrs. Bobbie Ellsberry and HOBO JR. is a black gelding owned by E. C. Anderson. Dawn Aire Stables is owned by Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Olander and the trainer is E. A. Allsup. SHADOW’S BLUE BLAZE is a blue roan gelding that will be shown by Dottie Olander. Two other nice horses own ed by Mr. Olander are GUNSMOKE’S MISS PRISS, a three-year-old black mare, and DAWN’S IKE, an age gray gelding. Bob Carpenter has two horses that seem to be coming along nicely. He has a mare called CLOWN’S COTTON CANDY, and a two-year-old stallion bv SPUR’S CLOWN. Of course almost everyone knows by now that Billy Brantley has moved to Mobile. I am sure this barn must be buzzing with activity and good horses. I’ll bet Lynn Doughty is proud to have her SETTING SUN’S APOLLO so close to home! 38 Did you know that Alabama has the second largest population of Tennessee Walking Horses? There is only one state ahead of us - you guessed it - Ten nessee. The many saddle clubs that have been organ ized in Alabama have done much for the promotion of all types of horses, particularly quarter horses, Walk ing Horses and just plain pleasure horses. Alabama leads the country in the rate of increase in the number of horse projects among youth. In 1964 the number of 4-H Club projects more than doubled to a figure of 2,349. By 1966, it had leaped to over 6,100. It is also evident, by the new training barns that have sprung up within the past two or three years, that Alabama is on the upswing in the Walking Horse business. These pretty spring-like Sunday afternoons have been bringing the crowds out to Bridlewood Stables in Morris. Some new horses in the barn for Wayne Luna to work include SUN’S FLASHING SON, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Allen Jacks, Jr. of Tarrant. He is a flashy four-year-old stud. Allen Jacks, Sr. brought his gelding, PEPPER, to get shaped up to be shown by Charlotte Jacks. MERRY BOY SANDSTORM is a big coming five-year-old sorrel horse owmed by Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Barrow of Tarrant. Mr. and Mrs. Lou George of Centerpoint have their blue roan two-year-old in training and Robert Sandlin of Warrior recently brought a black filly by MERRY GO BOY to start training. MACK K’S REBEL JOHN is a nice amateur gelding owned by F. L. Eddings. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Renfroe of Troy will be coming out with some good horses this season, as usual. SUN UP R was the winner of the Four-Year-Old Class at Montgomery this past year and will be a strong con tender for the big stake at the Celebration this year. He is a sorrel stallion by MIDNIGHT SUN. Mr. Ren froe has two sorrel colts by MACK K’S CASTRO ready for the show ring this season. Mrs. Renfroe will be showing CASTRO’S BONANZA in Ladies Amateur and four-year-old classes. This gelding was World’s Champion Two-Year-Old in 1966. In the Open Ama teur class, she will show her black stallion, MACK K’S SPEEDWAY. Renfroe Farms is standing MACK K’S CASTRO
