projects . . . " Son-of-a-gun ! That ’ s 600 horses ! We had better start raising some colts fast because soon the demand will exceed the supply . For those of you who do not know how the 4-H Club functions , we will offer a brief explanation . Each year , thousands of youngsters in the 4-H Club start a project . Each youngster selects an animal for which they are totally responsible . During the year they feed and
care for this animal and during the spring , summer and fall they show it in competition with others who have the same animal .
Where do they get these animals ? Some buy them with help from their parents . Others receive them as gifts from breed enthusiasts who are interested in promoting their particular stock . Others get them on a lease basis or a half-interest basis and they share the profits when the animal is sold at the end of the season .
In the case of horses , there are several other breeds that have been pursuing the 4-H Club market for years and have national programs worked out in each state to provide youngsters with mares and colts . The youngsters keep complete records on their projects , including feeding , veterinary care , growth and training . The youngster then trains the young colt to be shown at halter in Weanling and Yearling classes . If he wishes to continue this project , as opposed to selling the colt , he ( or she ) will continue to train the colt under saddle . They show in classes specified for each age group and performance just like any other horse show .
For each 4-H Club group with horse projects , there are well-trained adult advisors who follow a complete horse program as outlined by the national office . It is a great program that , if supported wholeheartedly by all of us in the Walking Horse business , can become a tremendous outlet for our horses .

MERCK TOP FORM ’ LINE GROWS WITH ADDITION OF WIPE-ON INSECTICIDE
An insecticidal repellent that is applied directly to a horse ’ s face and body is the newest entry in the
growing line of Top Form ’ horse care products by Merck & Co ., Inc .
The new product , Top Form ’ Insecticidal Repellent ( Wipe-On ), is intended primarily to keep annoying
flies , gnats and mosquitos away from horse and rider . However , the addition of a quick-kill ingredient will dispose of the persistent insects that do alight .
The wipe-on is applied with cloth or sponge , preferably dampened for uniform coverage . It is said to be
effective against stable flies , horse flies , mosquitos , face flies and gnats . Surveys of horsemen have shown that insect control
problems outrank all others , according to Merck . Some horses are bothered so much by flies that they lose considerable weight during fly season . Nor are problems always left behind in the stable .
