THE VIRGINIA VOICE
by
CHARLOTTE BARNES Lauderdale Stables Rt. 2 Buchanan, Virginia
As a new contributor to VOICE. 1 will briefly introduce myself: Charlotte Barnes, wife of Roanoke physician Dr Donald Barnes, and mother ol six active children. All members of the family are enthusiastic admirers o tie Tennessee Walking Horse and never miss a chance to see one in action.
For some time, owners of Walking Horses in the state of Virginia ia \ e shared a feeling of disappointment that no articles and very little information concerning horses in our area were carried by VOICE. We all feel there is good stock in the state and that the Walking Horse industry is definitely on the upswing. The purpose of this column is to stimulate the exchange of information among owners, trainers and enthusiasts. Therefore. Virginians, this is YOUR column and it must have YOUR support. Please send information to Lauderdale Stables, Buchanan, Virginia. 254-2157.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Felts and daughter Debbie of Roanoke are anxious for the show gates to open.
The Felts are the proud owners of CONFEDERATE RAIDER and Debbie is the pretty young lady you’ ve
seen showing him. Debbie polished up her riding ability at Joe Webb’ s camp last summer, where she was the winner of her age group at the end of the
two-week session. RAIDER was purchased by the Felts for Debbie at the Celebration from Mrs. Shirley
Schliecher, whose daughter showed him and was tied in the 17-and-under class. He was shown by Debbie 8 times before the end of show season.
In this short time she won 6 blues and 2 reserves showing in the amateur, not juvenile, classes. Debbie says RAIDER has been resting and getting fat all winter and has now been put in training with our good friend, Clarence Goodson, in Galax. They are planning
on showing in North Carolina and Tennessee, and hope to do well at the Celebration. We all wish her
good luck and know she and RAIDER will do well under the capable guidance of Clarence Goodson.
All of us here at Lauderdale Stables were happy to see John T. Carter and H. B. Hauk of Kingsport, Tennessee. Onzie Culbertson, trainer at Lauderdale, was formerly with " John T” at Robinwood Stables! Mr. Hauk has a big black three-year-old stud by MID NIGHT SUN and out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare in training, and also a beautiful black stake horse bv MAN OF RHYTHM.
We also enjoyed a recent visit from Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Tucker, owners and operators of Tucker’ s Stable in Hurt, Virginia. They say the Walking Horse business in Virginia is real good. They have sold a number of top young horses, such as a SUN’ S DELIGHT colt and a top junior horse, GEORGIA’ S SENSATION
to Jerry Dean of Kingsport, Tenn. Stirling Edmonds’, South Boston, Virginia, purchased two top two-yearolds, one by SUN’ S DELIGHT and the other by ROD GERS PERFECTION. MERRY COMMANDER G, a two-year-old grey stud, was purchased by Charles
Overstreet of Vinton, Virginia and is now in trainin g with Onzie.
Mr and Mrs. Marvin Humphrey of Stuart Draft
Virginia have purchased several top horses from Tuck’ pr’-Tstable: CRIMSON’ S SUN, NAMRON’ S RED WlNr
BUMBLE BEE, GOLDEN SUN SET, and MIDNIGHT
R U T H
Mr Tucker says he and Ramsey Bullington are working some excellent young stock. For Mr. and Mrs Douglas Branch of Gladstone, Va. they have a two-year-old filly by the Branchs’ stud, GO BOY’ S PIED PIPER. They also have a big black two-yearold stud by MIDNIGHT SUN, BLACK MIDNIGHT SUN, that the Tuckers say is just great!
Tucker’ s Stable just recently purchased a top breeding stud, STAR OF MIDNIGHT by MIDNIGHT SUN If you admired the three-year-old shown by Dudy Power for J. B. Sapp last year, you may be interested to learn that STAR OF MIDNIGHT is his sire!
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bowles, Martinsville, and Mr. and Mrs. John Helms, Stuart, stopped by Lauderdale Stables to see the new barn and meet Onzie. Mr. and Mrs. Bowles invited all of us here to visit Green Hill Stables in Martinsville. The Bowles, trainer Joe Gibbs, and his charming wife Alma made us feel at home. They have a lovely new lounge at Green Hill which is beautifully decorated with large glass windows overlooking the riding ring. Joe also has a very nice private office across from the lounge.
Joe is going to miss Mr. Riddle’ s famous mare, SUN’ S ZENITH, who was recently purchased by Mrs. Metzger, owner of TRIPLE THREAT. She plans to breed ZENITH to TRIPLE THREAT. GREY SUN, now owned by Mr. Johnny Hooker, is still with Joe. Mr. Hooker and GREY SUN should be a hard team to beat this season. One horse we’ d heard a lot about and enjoyed seeing was GO BOY’ S ENCHANTER, owned by Mr. Helms and Mr. Joyce of Stuart, Va. As always it was a pleasure to watch MACK K’ S DELTA, that very consistent gelding of Rosey Doyles. Rosey is from Roanoke and is one of the best juvenile riders in the state. DELTA and Rosey showed sixteen times last season, winning 14 blues and 2 seconds. That’ s pretty hard to beat. Joe also has SIR WINSTON’ S LADY B, owned by Emory Watson. This mare was tied at the Celebration last year in the three-year-old mare class when shown by Jerry Derryberry.
Trainer Everett Majors, Brookneal, Virginia, tells me he has really been busy and has some real " boogers.” Everett still has the gelding owned by Robert Lee Marshall, that won the class at Raleigh after placing fifth at the Celebration, but Mr. Marshall has him for sale. The stud that won the Junior Stake at me Washington International is owned by Mr. riicKs of Washington, and trained by Everett. Mr. McLaughlin, Lynchburg, has a four-year-old, MIDNIGHT SUN
GLO, in training. A two-year-old B. MAJOR WILSON colt is doing real good, Everett says.
