GATHERINGS FROM GEORGIA by Bonnie Nichols With all the zest that goes with genuine enthusiasm, the Jim Gulletts are beginning this show season in style. H. L. Meyers, the Gulletts’
trainer, is one of their biggest assets. He was formerly associated with Robert New Farriers, and has long been
connected with the Walking Horse world. Another boosting factor is their new
barn, now it its last stages of construction. It is located in Duluth, and will be one of the most workable areas around. It not only is every
inch of 350 feet long, but is complete with an apartment for weekending
horse-showing Gulletts. Mr. Gullett also has some pretty nice horses to go along with this barn. His own
mount goes by the unlikely name of MESHACK. If the name seems exceptional, the horse is even more so. Mr. Gullett and this bay stallion are
becomeing more of a team each show ' they make. Just recently they made a brilliant show at Comer.
H. L. Meyers isn’ t the kind of trainer to produce just one good horse a season. He is readying an amateur horse for Mrs. Gullett that will make the competition a little sharper wherever she shows. SON OF PANOLA is the name of this stallion, the fame comes later. Charlie Daniel has a two-year-old with H. L. named DOO LEY’ S VODKA. This son of TOM DOOLEY is coming along nicely. H. L. plans to take this horse to more shows as the season advances. Ed Merritt also has a good horse wjth H. L. Ed’ s amateur horse is by
MACK K and should win a basket full of ribbons this season. Another horse belonging to the Gulletts 1 SPIRIT’ S TIGER BAY. A three-yearold by SPIRIT OF MIDNIGHT, he is going to be one of the better three-year-olds out in Georgia this
year. There are horses and there are horses, but only once in a great while does one come along with that mysterious ' something’ that makes a real show horse. Allan Callaway has completed this year’ s great while
for he has HANDSHAKER’ S SPIR IT, a four-year-old stallion that is bound to become the spirit of ' 68. Allan is just beginning to campaign this full brother to HANDSHAKER’ S KAY, recently winning the Estill, CroiH-. r. nrnlina frmr-vear-old class. To say this horse is a potential winner is unnecessary, for he already is and will continue to be.
HANDSHAKER’ S RAIDER is a black two-year-old stallion, raised right on the Callaway’ s Cross Road
Farm. This horse collects a crowd everywhere he goes. Allan has his
full sister, a three-year-old black
mare named DEB, in preparation for Gartine Callaway. Gartine is presently showing their consistent pony, STROLLING JIM H. Lucy Callaway is showing JET’ S GEORGIA REBEL this season; a top amateur gelding last year, he looks even better now. Not only finished horses may be seen at this stable, but one of the finest crops of colts in Georgia is at home there, and all were sired by the Callaways’ top breeding stallion, DOCTOR’ S PRESCRIPTION.
SHOW STOPPERS: The " whale of a two-year-old” that early-seasonrumors attributed to Augusta’ s Dr. Stephen Brown. The rumors were
accurate- Huck Moss showed this horse to an easy win in the two-yearold class at Estill, South Carolina. Look for more of the same from this
horse.............. Merrill Talbot’ s new amateur gelding, GO BOY’ S DOU BLE DARE. He has a style all his own which, with Merrill’ s professional style of riding, makes a hard-to-beat combination. Merrill is taking over the reins after Boyd Hudgins started him off in a most successful way- mainly winning the junior class in Comer......... The sale of NORMAN’ S JOKER to Huey Martin of Gainesville. Harry Hancock only sold this good gelding because of upcoming Army duties which will occupy the next two years for him. Before leaving for the Army, Harry put the finishing touches on his new stable.
Bill Clark will work his horses for him while he’ s away.............. The
Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitors’ Association’ s surge of action. It in _ eludes new members, rule changes ' and careful organization, all adding up to a very useful year for GWHEa! This organization is concerned with bigger, better and more promotion for the Walking Horse, a catching idea.......... SUN’ S ROYAL HEIR D., a horse with vigor. Vigor because he has a definite readiness, that when harnessed into show power will make all the railbirds take notice. Boyd Hudgins is working this five-year-old chestnut stallion for J. R. Dekle of Athens, who owns and raised him. Son Mike, now serving with the U. S. Army in Korea, broke this horse and started him on his way... Frank Adair riding BLACK SNAPPER to win the stallion-gelding class at Comer. This horse is owned by Allan Huff of Crawford. Mr. Huff and his son started this horse and won a sack full of ribbons with him in his two-year-old season.......... SETTING SUN’ S SUNBEAM. This bay mare owned by Sugarloaf Farms is making some smashing shows with Tommy Howell aboard. This mare has a front end that is unbelievable, and
is a bay sensation in the show ring............. Mr. Jimmie Gray and TOP
HAT in the stake at Estill. Mr. Gray guided this gray gelding to an easy win in the championship. After a
long workout this horse was still as fresh as the moment he entered the ring. Not only is he a stake horse, but he is equally at home in an amateur class.
