The progress of the national promotional program was outlined by Mr. Pete Yokley, Publicity Chairman of the Association, and we were pleased to hear that the 4-H program was well received and plans were underway for a new film to replace " Free and Easy.” Also, plans for a series of large highway signs were announced. It was also noted that registrations for 1967 and 1968 were up to date for the first time in five years- a tremendous achievement in itself.
New officers for the coming year are: J. T. Kelly, President; Dr. B. S. Henry, 1st Vice President; M. G. Williams, 2nd Vice President; M. R. Bess( to fill the unexpired term of J. T. Kelly on the Board); Board Members—( re-elected) Bob Guinn,( new) Roy Davis, S. W. Beech, Dr. DeWitt Owen and Hugh Gillen. All of these men have considerable experience in the Walking Horse business and have been active in the affairs of the Association before.
A report on the progress of the proposed new National Headquarters building was heard and we were pleased to learn that construction is scheduled to begin sometime in August. The facility will be located across from the new Lewisburg municipal building and
will have 10,000 square feet of floor area( see architect’ s drawing).
fourth in the Futurity at the Celebration last year. He is working a black three-year-old for Ed Breedlove of Buford, Georgia, a black stallion for Bailey Evans of Shelbyville, and an EBONY three-year-old for L. M. Harper and W. A. Brown of Springfield, Tennessee.
Emmy Downes has a mare, EMMY’ S MINOR MIRA CLE, that will be showing in Amateur classes and
that Mack will show in Mare classes. Mack sold a black stud to Leo Baum of Ixonia, Wisconsin recently
and also sold a top four-year-old gelding to Preston Free of Columbia, S. C.
Mack’ s stable is easy to find and it seems from his list of horse owners that he’ s doing a great job. He has a blue roan gelding for Larry Gribble; a black three-year-old stud for James Rowland; a PERFEC TION mare for Will C. Terry; and a sorrel SHADOW two-year-old for H. C. Bailey.
S. W. BEECH STABLES
It’ s worth a trip to Middle Tennessee to stop by the S. W. Beech Stables and see the little black colt by GO BOY’ S SHADOW. He would be about 2 / 2 months old now and a rare sight to behold, because standing by him is one of the best-looking mares in our business, MIGHTY SUNBEAM. There’ s nothing more to say, except— go by and see.
When you breed a top show mare to a World’ s Champion, the results are usually the very best. Charlie Waters has sent SPUR’ S SUMMER DREAM to breed to MERRY GO BOY and Billy Liles sent WALTZING MATILDA, owned by the Fishkins of Gibsonia, Pa. to be bred to MERRY GO BOY last year. Product— another black colt.
C. A. BOBO & SON STABLES
One thing that you are sure to see when you’ re on the Nashville Highway going out of Shelbyville is Charles Bobo working horses along the road in front of his barn. He and his son are so busy working horses that it’ s hard to get him to stop and talk for just a few minutes. This is one of the main reasons his stable is always full of horses— he works them.
It’ s a real thrill to see Bobo work MIKE’ S MIGHTY MAN He is a great show horse with a big, big lick.
When we try to name stock and owners for this stable we always leave somebody out— he has so many but we do suggest that if you’ re looking for fine stock to buy, or just looking, go by and see Bobo.
STEPPIN’ HI STABLES
This fine training facility is located in Connelly Springs, North Carolina and is being headlined by two top horses for 1968. Trainer Wayne Abee is working a top two-year-old filly by the name of PERFECTIONS SUN MAID. This big bay filly is by RODGERS PER FECTION and out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare. Wayne thinks she has the ability to go all the way and is campaigning her for the honors at the Celebration.
The other top liner at Steppin’ Hi Stables is MID NIGHT JOE. This horse made some truly great shows last year as a junior horse and is now out to make his mark in the open classes.
Wayne will be showing both of these fine horses at shows prior to the Celebration, so be looking for them. If you are in the area of Steppin’ Hi Stables, it would be time well spent to visit this barn.
