RENFROE STABLES Dr. Ray Renfroe is one oi Charles Bobo s customers that spends about as much time in Shelbyville as he does at home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Dave Culbertson trains and looks after the mares and colts at home; however, Bobo works the following stock: PRETTY WOMAN, shown in mare classes; a black three-year-old that’ s a half-sister to MISS SUNDOWN, a two-year-old filly out of a full sister to MR. EXEC
UTIVE; ANOTHER SUNDOWN, that Bobo plans to show next year; a two-year-old that Bobo and Dr. Renfroe are very excited about. They bought this two-year-old from Toby Green and the Berrys, Murfreesboro, recently. His name— THE SPOILER.
Dr. Renfroe tells us that Ray. Jr. has been showing MR. SUNDOWN R, a full brother to MISS SUNDOWN R. in amateur classes and he ' s now for sale. Also, MISS SUNDOWN R. is being bred this season to RODGERS PERFECTION. This should be a tremendous team to produce a top colt.
STEVE HILL STABLES
A stop by the Steve Hill Stables will usually find some of the top stock in the country being worked. For Frank Roper, Steve is working SUN’ S ANGEL, the reserve Mare Champion of the 1967 Celebration. The first time out for this mare was Lebanon and she came home with the blue.
For the Rudolphs of Paducah, Kentucky, Steve has a four-year-old liver chestnut mare by SUN’ S ELDO RADO that’ s also hard to beat. Speaking of mares, Steve has a three-year-old for Charles Sego of Munfordville, Kentucky, ANN’ S EL DORADO, that’ s a big, fine, airy show mare. Also for Mr. Sego he has a black age stud, ELDORADO’ S GENERAL. With only the three mares mentioned, he has a mare for the three- and four-year-old and age mare classes. Steve has two top yearlings. GO BOY’ S BLACK BARON, owned by Steve Hill Stables, and a ROYAL AIRE filly for Dwaine Clark, Los Angeles, California, that he s training for lead line classes. In two-yearold classes, he has an ELDORADO chestnut stallion and a black stallion that he has high hopes for. l he one that everybody keeps asking about is SEN SATIONAL SHADOW, owned by Bel Aire Stables, Calhoun. Georgia. 1 his is the black four-year-old that everyone watched so closely last year in Junior classes. Well, he ' s now in the age class and to date has no1 Deen shown. Sieve tells us that he is one of the most natural big-lick horses he has ever ridden During the first months that Steve worked him, his only comments were, " He’ s working good,” then he began saying, " He’ s getting better every day.” Recently he said, " He’ s a great horse.” We’ ll all be watchine for Steve Hill and SENSATIONAL SHADOW, along with a top truckload ■kload of horses at shows this
WINDHAVEN STABLES
Windhaven Stables in Galax, Virginia is off to a o-reat start in this, their third year in the business The stable is owned by John and Anne Vaughan and Joe Hauk is the very capable trainer.
Their top amateur mare, SOUVENIR’ S STUCK UP GIRL, is at her best this year and that is saying a
lot Many people have long declaied this horse one of the best and Anne Vaughan and STUCK UP are out
to prove them right this year at the Celebration. Anne has already ridden the horse to four championships this year including the Amateur Championship at the big Hickory, N. C. Show.
Also in their roomy new barn is JET’ S FAIR PLAY, who is ready and willing to contend for the World’ s Walking Horse Championship in 1968. He is a sevenyear-old son of SUN’ S JET PARADE and has an enviable show ring record. He performs all three gaits like they should be and can go yonder with the best
of them. John Vaughan’ s horse is MAC’ S MISCHIEF, a gelded son of MIDNIGHT MAC and a top-flight contender
in the Virginia-Carolina area. Joe has two bright prospects coming along: BLACK
STAR, a three-year-old stallion by B. MAJOR WILSON; and JET’ S SHADY LADY, a two-year-old granddaughter of SUN’ S JET PARADE. Joe hopes to have these two ready to compete for Celebration honors in 1968.
Also in the business of raising Walking Horses, Windhaven Stables has four of the nicest yearling fillies around with such sires as EBONY MASTERPIECE, MIDNIGHT MACK K and MIDNIGHT SATAN. The MASTERPIECE colt is an unusually pretty and wellput-together filly with plenty of size and a big-lick way of going. All of these fillies are out of MERRY BOY and MERRY GO BOY mares.
This is one of those up-and-coming stables and we will no doubt be hearing much more about them in
the 1968 show season. Visitors are welcome at all times and we urge the Walking Horse lovers in this area to stop by and visit this fine facility.
SILO HILL STABLES
This fine stable in Newberry, South Carolina is brimming with activity and optimism in this 1968 show season. Trainer Bill Sledge is being ably assisted by his son, Bill, Jr., and together they keep the stock really working at Silo Hill.
We are happy to report that owner Guy Whitener suffered no ill effects from his automobile accident on
the way to the Murray Farm Sale.
Guy’ s daughter Stuart is off to a brilliant start on her six-year-old sorrel gelding, BILLY HI FIVE. She has won five straight shows in North and South Carolina against top-flight competition. At the recent Commerce, Georgia show, Stuart captured the Amateur Class over 18 entries. This victory tabbed her the Northeast Georgia State Champion Amateur for this year.
Bill Sledge, Jr. tied second to SUPER SPORT at this show on a top four-year-old named SUN’ S D \ NA- MITE M. Watch for this fine horse in the future.
INVASION PERSUASION is looking great and will be campaigned in Stake classes this year. This horse was unable to compete last year because of an injury but is now looking better than ever.
Bill thinks PERSUASION has the ability to battle the best of the breed. He has not definitely planned his show schedule yet but when this big horse hits the ring, someone better be ready.
