SATAN’S SHADOW is out of BEASLEY’S MERRY
MAY, a fine black mare by GO BOY’S SHADOW with
MERRY BOY breeding. He is by MIDNIGHT SATAN
who was by MIDNIGHT SUN. What did we say about
breeding? "Breed the best you’ve got to the best you
can find.” It looks as if in this case that is exactly
what they did. At least the results seem to indicate it.
So much for the son . . . now let’s discuss the father!
MIDNIGHT SATAN is now a twelve-year-old. He
has just completed his first season as a major breed
ing stud, standing at the Haynes Haven Stallion Sta
tion in Spring Hill, Tennessee. His dam, the famous
MERRY BOY mare named MARY ANN YOUNG, was
bred to MIDNIGHT SUN in the spring of 1955 by
Willa Young. On April 11, 1956 a fine black stud colt
was foaled which was raised by Jim Beasley and
A. D. "Pop” Luna. The colt was named MIDNIGHT
SATAN and he is a full brother to such notables as
MIDNIGHT LADY ANN, RHYTHM QUEEN, SLIP
ALONG MIDNIGHT and MR. NAMRON. As a colt he
was sold to Mr. Luna, who trained and showed him
successfully as a young horse, never being defeated.
About a month before the Celebration in 1958, MID
NIGHT SATAN was sold to Mr. E. G. Moore of St.
Petersburg, Florida who turned him over to trainer
Steve Hill for the big show. Steve showed him well
and tied Reserve with him in the Two-Year-Old Class
that year. He was shown under the name of MID
NIGHT RAIDER.
Shortly after the Celebration MIDNIGHT SATAN
was sold to Mr. Bob Locke for an almost unprece
dented $10,000. He was later sold to Mr. Claude
Brown and, as his reputation continued to grow, he
attracted even more acclaim. Considered by many to
be one of the most natural Walking Horses ever to
enter the showring, MIDNIGHT SATAN was a "nat
ural” as an amateur horse. He was purchased by Mr.
Frank Roper for an undisclosed sum and started on
his way to many years of stardom in this class. Train
er Paul Smith worked MIDNIGHT SATAN for several
years as trainer for Mr. Roper and later purchased
the horse and retired him at stud.
The big black stud was handled at the Zolly Derry-
berry Stables in Pulaski, Tennessee for one season,
and was later moved to Selma, Alabama to stand at
the Milam Turner Stables. This is where he got his
first real test as a breeding horse and results now
show that he is a most dominant stud. After he pur
chased MIDNIGHT SATAN, Mr. Turner arranged for
him to stand the 1967 season with Mr. Robert W.
"Buddy” Appel in Selma. As spring of this year ar
rived there was much excitement awaiting the arrival
of the first planned crop of MIDNIGHT SATAN colts.
The results were outstanding. His colts are predomi
nantly black with a few bays and virtually no off
color colts. (See pictures of several of the many colts
sired by MIDNIGHT SATAN in this issue.)
With several outstanding colts now under saddle,
including SATAN’S SHADOW and SATAN’S GO BOY,
a top colt now in training with Jack Littrell, and a
crop of real fine young colts on the ground, MID
NIGHT SATAN is well on his way to becoming one
of the top studs around. With this in mind, Mr. Jack
Brewer and Mr. Herman Keeton purchased him in
January of this year and made arrangements for him
to stand at stud at the newly organized Haynes Ha
ven Stallion Station, with Mr. Clint Robinson as man
ager. Thus far the reception to MIDNIGHT SATAN
has been excellent. He has had a tremendous season
and has proven to be a potent breeder with the abili
ty to pass on his own outstanding traits to his colts.
June, 1968
We invite you to visit Haynes Haven on your next
trip to Middle Tennessee and see this beautiful and
historic farm as well as MIDNIGHT SATAN. See him
. . . look at his colts . . . and then decide for yourself
if he can produce a top colt for you next year. We
believe he can.
STRONG EVIDENCE — Here are just some of the colls sired by MIDNIGHT
SATAN that show his dominant breeding qualities. From such off-color
mares as white, blue roan. Palomino, red roan, and light chestnut with a
blaze and four white stockings, he has produced black colts and a bay. Pretty
strong evidence!
