Kenneth will be showing a flashy going sorrel SUN DUST gelding and several others— good ones—• will be making their ring debuts this year. All the horse owners at Riddle Hill Stables are extremely eloquent in their praise of Ken Jones. Ken’ s wife, Lovella, and two youngsters, Connie, 9, and Randy, 11, all share his love for the Walking Horse.
FRANK CLARK STABLES
Harold Kilpatrick, trainer at the Clark Stables in Arab, Alabama, is working about fifteen of the thirty horses at the barn. They are justly proud of their stud, SUN’ S HERO by MIDNIGHT SUN. Both Clark boys show: Randy riding an age mare in Juvenile and Age Mare Classes and Steve showing HANDSHAK ER’ S PERFECTION, a five-year-old Walking Pony. Harold Kilpatrick is having a successful season with HELLO DOLLY, a four-year-old mare.
COLEMAN STABLES
For a really enjoyable trip, visit Hamner Cobbs and Wynn Coleman in Greensboro. Ask Hamner to show you his many acres of pasture and his lovely fishing lakes. On this beautiful pasture graze sheep, cattle, ponies and horses. Twenty-five or thirty lovely broodmares, many with foals, and fifteen registered ponies is a sight long to be remembered.
Wynn Coleman has three outstanding Walking Horse stallions. PERFECTIONS HILLTOPPER, a four-yearold stud bred by Dr. Porter Rodgers, is a three-quarter brother to the ENTERTAINER. With Obia Spencer aboard, HILLTOPPER deserves one word: " Great”! The great SPURS CLOWN makes his home in the Coleman Stable. The third stud is DUKE OF MID NIGHT, a very handsome horse. Wynn has ten yearling fillies and twelve stud colts sired by CLOWN and DUKE OF MIDNIGHT. There are thirty-odd broodmares, all of which are registered. This place is a veritable horse lovers’ paradise.
HARTNETT STABLES
We recently learned from seventeen-year-old Chrissie Hartnett that the One aged stallion, DETERMINA TION, had suffered an accident that proved to be fatal. This is the stallion that they purchased from Mr. L. Frank Roper several years ago, and he has been used jointly for showing and breeding. At the time of his death DETERMINATION was stabled in Newport News, Virginia at the Pin Oak Farms, where he was being bred He had previously been stabled and trained at the Lynn Ann Stables in Evans, Georgia, where he was scheduled to return after breeding season.
The Hartnett Stables is located at Norfolk, Virginia, where Chrissie and her father, Dan Hartnett, maintain their own horse activity. The Hartnetts have several horses in training, including a fine four-yearold bay stallion named PRIDE OF DETERMINATION. He is in training at Lynn Ann Stables. We are sorry to learn of the death of DETERMINATION, a fine horse that furnished many hours of pleasure and enjoyment to his owners.
JOE MARTIN STABLES
A recent visit to the Joe Martin Stables in Shelbyville, Tennessee indicated that a lot was going on, including the anticipated arrival of a ' Tittle Joe( or Judy) Martin” sometime in early September. Judy is doing fine and appears to be in good spirits, despite the fact that she can’ t do much riding these days.
With twenty-six horses in training, Joe has his hands full. In the two-year-old bracket we were much impressed with a bay stud by MIDNIGHT RAID. He is owned by Buddy Payne of Gallatin, and is named LAST RAID. He is a big colt with a lot of motion. R. B. Chambers of Farmington, Michigan has a black SIR WINSTON colt that is making progress. The three-year-old ranks are headed by REFLEC TION’ S SHADOW, the third-place winner at the Celebration last year. He is owned by Payne, Martin and Wiser, and is reported to be on the way to the top again this year. Judy and Joe are proud of their own SWAMP CAT, a three-year-old stud that won the Portland show. MIDNIGHT FINALE, the third place horse in the ' 67 Futurity, is also owned by Joe and Judy. Ernest Smith of Winchester is pleased with his black SIR WINSTON mare. They sold a fine three-year-old mare to Mr. Best of North Carolina for trainer Huck Moss. She is by SIR WINSTON out of a MIDNIGHT SECRET mare.
