Dear Sir: letters
I call your attention to a news bulletin appearing in the December issue of the VOICE, stating that recently the U. S. Department of Agriculture has officially ruled that the Tennessee Walking Horse industry is a " luxury enterprise” insofar as the federal government is concerned.
I am very much concerned with this matter and literally shocked to learn that the U. S. Department of Agriculture in Washington could be this confused, unjust, and misinformed. How could it possibly be that the federal government considers the entire structure of breeding, raising and selling of Tennessee Walking Horses a " luxury enterprise” when literally thousands of farmers and other individuals over the country do this for a livelihood and attempt no other form of employment. I wonder if the thousands of individuals that have intrusted their time and money in pastures, brood stock, and breeding facilities to maintain their income feel that it is merely a " luxury enterprise.”
What about the scores of individuals over the nation that have given up cattle farming, and other gainful occupations, to derive their income from raising, buying, and selling Tennessee Walking Horses? Would they consider this only a luxurious way of spending their time and sweat?
To any thinking man, this official ruling by the U. S. Department of Agriculture is absurd and an insult to the many individuals scattered over this country that derive anhonest and hard way of life from the Walking Horse industry. If this ruling is allowed to stand, then it will certainly be a serious and crippling blow to the Walking Horse breeder, trainer and show element. Every attempt should be made by every interested individual to curtail this ridiculous ruling and set the thinking straight on this particular matter once and for all.
In this time of stress, when more revenue is needed by the federal government, I hardly agree that the Tennessee Walking Horse industry be so unjustly imposed upon.
I am enclosing a copy of this letter to my congressman and State Commissioner of Agriculture here in Mississippi, and I urge you, the editor of the VOICE, to ask everyone concerned to contact their respective congressmen as soon as possible.
Sincerely yours, ROY F. HARMON, JR., M. D. Houston, Mississippi
Editor’ s Reply: Dr. Harmon, thank you for your response to this critical situation. We have received considerable comment regarding this issue but your letter seemed to reflect the basic attitude a little better than most. We suggest that all of our readers take heed of this issue and that they follow your lead in contacting their congressmen. Thank you for your interest!
Dear Sir:
I recently purchased a Tennessee Walking Horse( TOP BRASS, registration number 600404), His sire was KING OF MIDNIGHT, registration number 540980. KING OF MIDNIGHT was listed as a Two- Year-Old World’ s Champion Walking Horse in the National Celebration in 1952. The stallion that I recently purchased was foaled May 30, 1959 at Jamestown, New York.
I am writing to you hoping that you will publish this letter, as you
often do under Letters to the Editor, as I would like to learn more about the whereabouts of KING OF MIDNIGHT, whether he is still being shown has expired, or is used for breeding purposes. Possibly the owner would be so kind as to drop me a line at my address below, giving me some information. I am very curious as to what happened to this horse as I never read or hear anything about him.
Many thanks for any assistance you can give me.
Sincerely,
GEORGE D. WRIGHT P. O. Box 126 Smyrna, Delaware 19977
Editor’ s Reply: We were unable to locate any information on KING OF MIDNIGHT, so we’ re leaving it up to our readers. Thanks for writing.
