HOW THE TENNESSEE WALKING HORSE BREED ESTABLISHED AND RECOGNIZED IT ’ S FOUNDATION HORSES
We have had many requests for information regarding the establishment oi the Tennessee Walking Horse registry and especially as to “ how55 the foundation horses were selected . Ima *, me the confusion that would arise If
we were to try to establish a new breed of horse and a group of interested individuals was to sit down and discuss outstanding animals that should be accorded “ foundation ” status . This is exactly the situation that was presented in April of 1935 when the Breeders Association was organized and those men responsible for obtaining official recognition from the U . S . Department of Agriculture Animal Husbandry Department , sat down to establish their “ Foundation ” horses . Needless to say , each man probably wanted “ his ” horse to be the Number One Foundation Sire .
Horses were discussed at length and the most important consideration was given to those horses who had a record of producing outstanding colts that had , in turn , become outstanding producers . A lot of the horses listed as foundation horses had been dead for many years when the Breeders Association was organized and were rated by “ reputation ” alone . As the men assembled came to an agreement , a total of 61 horses were designated as Deceased Sires and Dams and were given F-numbers in the first volume of the Stud Registry printed in 1938 . Other horses were added to the list as their production was rated until 1950 . Registry numbers as assigned began at 350001 . The first two numbers of the registration number signifying the year the horse was registered . ( This still applies .) Foundation numbers ran
UP to 115 and it was decided to halt the listing of Foundation horses at this point . One horse was later removed from the list by action of the executive committee , leaving a total of 114 Foundation Horses of the Tennessee
Walking Horse breed .
