CHANGE EM WALKING HORSE TAX STATUS NOT CONFIRMED BY GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS
In the December 1967 issue of the VOICE, we published a news release concerning a change in the tax structure of the Walking Horse business from an agricultural enterprise to a " luxury enterprise.” As soon as we learned of this move, we launched an immediate investigation into the matter at the local, state and national levels.
The results of this investigation proved reassuring to us and we hope to our readers. The local officials of the Internal Revenue Service in Chattanooga informed us that they had heard nothing of this reported change and referred us to the Department of Agriculture. Officials of this department had also had no notification of such a change and expressed
the opinion that such was not the case. State officials in Nashville expressed no knowledge
of these changes, in either the Department of Agriculture or the Internal Revenue Sendee.
Former editor of the VOICE, Ben Green, checked with officials in Washington and received a reply from Thomas R. Hughes of the Department of Agriculture. The letter read, in part: '" You indicated that
you were advised that the U. S. Department of Agriculture has defined the Tennessee Walking Horse industry as a ' luxury enterprise’ and not an ' agriculture
connected enterprise.’ We have no knowledge that this is the case and can find no record of such a
defined statement by the Department.” The results of our investigation indicate that no change has been made in the tax status of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry. While the original report has gained wide circulation in newspapers and periodicals all over the country, we can gain no confirmation from responsible officials in government that a change has taken place.
