Lilly, came up to her and, handing her a drink, said, "What are you so quiet about, Helen?” Without think ing, Helen took the drink and said, "I was just hav ing a little fun studying people.” Looking at the drink that Lilly had given her, she said, "Now, you know I don’t drink, and I ...” Lilly stopped her and said, "Go ahead . . . drink it. You need to relax a little.” Helen took a deep breath and drank it all down in one gulp. It was past midnight and everyone was really get ting cranked up and having a ball. The Christmas music had been set aside for some Boots Randolph jazz and the place was really rocking. Lonny had been in the living room talking to a couple of other trainers when Mack Malone walked up. He said, "Lonny, you better come in here and get your wife before she real ly puts on a show.” Laughing, Lonny said, "What’s going on?” Taking him by the arm, Mack led him into the den where everybody was gathered watching a couple dance to a very loud rendition of "Yakkety Sax.” Lonny nearly dropped his drink. Helen and her partner were really putting on a show, and she ap peared to be more than a little bit drunk. Easing in between several people who were urging her into bet ter effort, Lonny grabbed Helen by the arm and said, "C’mon, Gypsy Rose Lee . . . let’s get you settled down.” Several of the men yelled, "Aw, c’mon, Lonny . . . she’s just having a little fun.” Lonny half-smiled and said, "Yeah - and so is everybody else!” Handing a very wobbly Helen over to Lilly Hill and Alex Bart lett’s wife, he said, "Would you girls see if you can sober her up a little?” It was about two in the morning before Helen made her appearance again. Dr. Greely was showing some films of the Festival and everyone had settled down after a good breakfast of country ham and eggs. Lon ny saw Helen in the light of the Christmas tree and went over to her. "You all right, sugar?” he asked. She looked at him through tear-stained eyes and said, "I’m still a little shaky, but I just might make it.” Kissing her on the cheek, he said, "What in the world got into you, anyway?” She sat down in his lap and said, "I’ll tell you all about it sometime. Merry Christ mas, honey.” Merry Christmas! It was almost nine-thirty before Lonny woke up the next morning. Helen was already up and in the kit chen. Putting on his clothes, Lonny washed his face and combed his hair before going into the next room. Looking around him, he had to laugh. There were people huddled in little spots around the house sleep ing. The smell of coffee drew him into the kitchen where a group was gathered around the table talking horses. "How many left last night?” he inquired, as he poured himself a cup of coffee. Looking outside, he saw that eight inches of snow was on the ground and that there were several cars in the ditch going up the hill toward the barn. Mark Bullard looked up and said "Dr. Pelegrin had chains on his car, so he left with a load going to the motel. Everyone else is still here.” Taking a deep breath, Lonny said, "Well, folks, it looks like you’re stuck here for awhile. I suggest we do what we all like to do best - go up to the barn and work a few horses.” "Yeah,” said Dr. Greely, "let’s hitch old BEAU up to a sleigh and take a ride.” (Continued next month) December, 1968 Big Savings On Saddlery!
