I recently made one of the nicest barn visits since I have been back in Missouri. Louis Sloan of Dixon has an outstanding group of horses in training. I feel that, horse for horse, Louis has a tremendous show string, as his record in the ring this year will show. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan and all their friends and customers certainly make one welcome at their stables. If you have the chance, stop by and see their horses; you won’ t be disappointed.
Louis is standing THE WITCH DOCTOR, sire of the great WARLOCK, at his barn. This horse has a beautiful head and is producing some excellent colts. We saw nine WITCH DOCTOR colts and all of them look exactly ali; e All of these weanlings were black, highheaded, fine-eared, and short-backed with plenty of head motion. One especially attracted attention. At the front of the barn they have a WITCH DOCTOR orphan that really attacks that bottle on the fence. They also have some nice yearlings by this stallion.
All of Louis’ horses were fat and in excellent shape and could go ail day. MAGIC BOY is a beautiful black two-year-old stallion by BLACK MAGIC that is owned by Louis and Victor Wulff of Vienna. I have seen this colt show and in the hallway 1 saw him again. He can cock up and swell up like a Celebration champion. This great colt has been shown three times, with two
blues and a red to his credit. Louis says he is a better colt at this stage than his wras his HANDSHAK ER’ S DELIGHT colt that owner Clyde Frey recently sold for a considerable amount. This horse made a tremendous show at Searcy and is now at Doug Wolaver’ s barn. He is a horse to watch, and he was made by Louis.
Louis and Victor Wulff have another tremendous horse in MAGIC’ S MIDNIGHT. This three-year-old stallion is undefeated this season and was beaten only once last year. He is quite a horse. Another of their
top money-winners is EBONY’ S HIGH FASHION, a beautiful, fine sorrel stallion by EBONY MASTER PIECE out of a MERRY BOY mare. He is a four-yearold, and in addition to his winning ways, we saw two
beautiful weanlings by him. Watch out for this one! f certainly enjoyed visiting with the Withers family of Dixon. Debby has several horses in training with Louis. Her smiling face is a familiar one at the shows and she and her black mare, MIDNIGHT KAY, have
124 been cutting a wide swath. This season KAY is undefeated with Debby in the saddle. So far they have eleven blues to their credit. The Withers recently purchased STORM WARNING for Debby to show but he has been off his feed lately. They had a new arrival the day they visited with us; they had named it BLACK OUT.
We saw SHAKER’ S SHAKER by HANDSHAKER
work while we were there and with his headshake he lives up to his name. This bay colt is between ages and hasn’ t been shown yet, but is being readied for
the fall shows. He is owned by the Lawsons.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Robberson of Springfield have two horses with Louis. RODGERS’ WONDER BOY, a three-year-old bay stallion, has made three excellent shows this season, winning two of them and taking the red in the third show. GLORY’ S BIG SHOT, an eight-year-old chestnut stallion, also belongs to them. JO BON’ S MIDNIGHT BOY, owned by John Anderson of Chamois, has been shown eight times to cap ture six blues. Although he is just a four-year-old, this chestnut stallion won the Open Walking Class a Eugene.
WITCH DOCTOR’ S MAGIC by WITCH DOCTOR owned by Melody Major, is a pretty black mare with plenty of stamina.
BOMBER’ S RED PEPPER, owned by Allen Humphrey of Dixon, is a full brother to SUN’ S ROCK- AWAY BOMBER. He is an outstanding two-year-old.
GO BOY’ S SCOOTER, a three-year-old bay stallion, is a full brother to SILVER SAM that is owned by Vic Wulff. Other outstanding horses in the barn include: STARDUST LAD, a two-year-old by SILVER SAM owned by Sam Doyel of Rolla that is doing well at shows; MAGIC’ S SUE, a mare by BLACK MAGIC and out of a GUNSMOKE mare that is owned by Nelson Wilson. She won the mare class at Republic although she has been in the barn only a short time.
BUD ON PARADE is another full brother to SIL VER SAM, and is owned by Mrs. Ken Wright. This roan stallion did exceptionally well last season.
Our Sonny Scrivner Stables is doing well and there have been a number of new arrivals lately. RAN DALL’ S SNOWMAN, a five-year-old white stallion that Sonny showed as a two-year-old in Missouri when he was working for Jim Babb, is back at Scrivner Stables and he has shown tremendous improvement for owners Bill Bayles and Nancy Randall of Siloam Springs, Arkansas. PIDDLEY’ S BLACK ACE, owned by Bob Bailey of Lebanon, is another recent arrival, and this beautiful little black stallion has been burning up the ring. Another new horse in the barn is SON’ S PRIDE BOY, a bay gelding that will be shown by owner Jimmy Watts of Rogersville.
One of the most promising and foremost trainers in our state is Don Bolinger of California. Don always has a good string of show horses and easily keeps his barn full. The Bolinger Stables is a family affair and daughter Connie Bolinger is a well-known figure in the show ring. Connie recently won second in the ladies’ class at the Searcy, Arkansas show. There are several younger Bolingers who also do an excellent job in the saddle.
Don is well known for his young horses, especially those by GO BOY’ S COMMAND P. This well-known sire is standing at the California stables.
Probably the most talked-about horse in our area is the truly outstanding Junior horse, AIR GUN. George Logan of Nevada owns this beautiful black four-year-
