C . A . BOBO & SON STABLES
A recent visit to the Bobo Stables in Shelbyville , Tennessee leads one to believe that the horse business is getting better and better . They are almost finished with their beautiful new barn and all indications are that they are well under way toward a successful season . Bill Bobo , who is now working with Charlie , took us around and showed us their horses . They are working almost forty head and have some serious ideas about some of their horses .
There is one horse here that bears special mention ; MIKE ’ S MIGHTY MAN . This was the 1967 World ’ s Grand Champion Walking Pony that many refer to as '' one of the true big-time Walking Horses in the showring today .” He was a popular favorite and has everything it takes to win . The big program at the present is to groom this horse for stake class competition this year . That ’ s right ! MIKE ’ S MIGHTY MAN will be shown by C . A . Bobo this year and will make a bid to win the big one at the Celebration . A lot of people think he can win it . . . including C . A . Bobo . You better watch for this one !
They are working several fine two-year-olds and as usual have a well-balanced string of stock for every class . Juveniles and amateurs will be going strong for the Bobo Stables and Kim Lovette will again be showing HILL ’ S PERFECTION . They say this horse is also ready to take on all competition . More about the Bobo Stables later .
BOB COOLEY STABLES
" Where did he come from ?” That is a question that a lot of people are going to be asking about Mr . Bob Cooley from Madisonville , Tennessee this year . Bob has been training Tennessee Walking Horses for about twelve years ; however , it was just two years ago that he decided to try it professionally . Thus far his venture has been profitable and successful , and all indications are that the future holds great things for Mr . Cooley . He now has several good backers and within the next six months they plan to construct a fine show stable on Highway 411 north of Madisonville .
The big feature at Cooley Stables this year is a twoyear-old stud colt by SUN ’ S DELIGHT . His name is
IS
RIDGELEA ’ S DELIGHT and he could be the rmp „ colt ever sired by the 1963 World Grand Champion
He is a sorrel with a flax mane and tail and already stands fifteen-two . With one blue already under hk belt ( he won the Winter Haven show ), he is doin » more than any two-year-old we have seen . RIDGF LEA ’ S DELIGHT is owned by Mr . and Mrs . j fT Lee of Madisonville , and is their first show horse Make a note — " This could be the horse in 1968 ’’ Mr . and Mrs . Lee also own DEBONAIRE ’ S DELIGHT a fine two-year-old filly , and a mare that is the dam
of RIDGELEA . Another member of the Lee family , Charles Lee
owns nine horses , three of which are in training with Bob . They are attracting a lot of attention with DE LIGHT ’ S DELIGHT L , a top three-year-old stud that won a first at Adairsville , Georgia recently . Thirteenyear-old Sharon Lee will ride MAJOR ’ S BLUE BOY a fine Juvenile gelding , this year , and Bob will also show a filly by SPIRIT OF MIDNIGHT for them .
Mr . and Mrs . John Peels of Nashville have a good
three-year-old gelding by DANNY GO BOY in training , and Frank Metcalf of Sparta , Tennessee has a junior gelding by SUN DUST in training . Mr . Metcalf also has a good three-year-old stud that is a full brother to MR . GLO .
From Dallas , Texas , Bob got a two-year-old colt from Mr . and Mrs . W . E . Campbell . He is a sorrel by SUN ’ S DELIGHT and is making great progress . The Rockwood Motor Company has a two-year-old black stud and a three-year-old bay mare in training , and Mr . and Mrs . Nat Campbell of Loudon have a fine black filly going strong . The Burnes Florist Shop in Madisonville has a sorrel filly also in training .
Bob Cooley is currently working fifteen head . He gets one hundred dollars a month to train a horse and is doing well . All indications are that as soon as he gets into the new stable he will have customers for the 29 stalls that will be available . We are pleased to see such fine young fellows doing well in the training profession and know that Bob Cooley and RIDGE LEA ’ S DELIGHT will be a credit to the breed in 1968 . Watch for them !
DOODIE POWER ’ S STABLE
One of the hottest young trainers in the Walking Horse business in Virginia is a native Virginian , L . T . " Doodie ” Power . Doodie has just hung out his own shingle in a new barn in the Figsboro area .
Prior to opening the new bam , Doodie worked with J . B . Sapp , Jr ., who closed his bam due to ill health . Doodie is credited with making , all the way , the top three-year-old stud , SUN ’ S REFLECTION , for Mr Sapp . The horse recently sold for a reported figure of $ 30,000 .
Doodie has been most successful with such age horses as MACK K ROYAL HEIR and a full brother to MACK K BIG STORY . Doodie demands a natural
walking lick from his horses . All the knowing horsemen of this area accredit Doodie with being the best man to " rub a colt ’ s back with saddle leather .” He starts a colt easy and puts it to walking " all over . Doodie says , " Time , patience and regular work puts them to hitten .”
He is now working several good two-year-olds . A
black CARBON COPY colt owned by Carl Simpson ooks like he may be one of " those things .” A sure trnng and a real threat to the two-year-old classes is a black stud colt owned by Odie Kelly . This colt was
