There was determination on the face of each rider as the horses were worked in a final warm-up pass before entering the big arena . At last they were called into the ring by the hornblower , and the battle for the top honor was underway . The competition and maneuvering taking place in that ring was something to see , but SUNBEAM ’ S PRODUCER with Glenn Miller riding her all the way gave another superb performance and carried off the championship honors for Blue Ridge Ranch . MY LITTLE MARGIE , with Ray Rhoads handling for Jean McBurney , tied reserve in this class loaded with top entries . PRINCE MERRY BOY gave another good head-shaking performance for owner-rider Bill Todd to capture the third ribbon . This class was one of the best-received of the night , and underlined the increasing interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse on the West Coast . Check the Horse Show Results section for all results from this show and other well-attended one- and twoday shows on the West Coast .
One of the highlights of the week was a cocktail luncheon hosted by Mr . and Mrs . S . James Molay of Santa Barbara and held at a beautiful private club , the Coral Casino . A brief Tennessee Walking Horse Exhibitors meeting was held , and guests attending the meeting included all the Horse Show officials who were able to attend , and a hearty welcome was extended to all . I would like to thank our gracious hosts for the most enjoyable and entertaining afternoon . An exhibitors ’ party was also given by the Santa Barbara National Horse Show that included buffet dining and dancing . I was impressed with the handling of this show that made it one of the best shows in the West .
It is very rewarding to receive the letters that are coming in regarding the Walking Horses on the West Coast . It appears that the people are becoming increasingly interested in the Walking Horse and are looking forward to reading the VOICE and watching this breed grow as the West Coast ' Walks On ,’ always remembering that " If they ’ re not Nodding , they ’ re not Walking ’’!

Coming on strong after a fine showing at the Celebration was Mrs . Newton Turrentine from Greenville , S . C . on GUNSMOKE ’ S STARLIGHT in the Amateur Mare class . She won the blue in a top class of mares . Tying the Red in this class was John B . Vaughn on SOUVENIR ’ S STUCK UPGIRL for WindhavenStables , Galax , Virginia . Third was MARY BELLS with Mary Vann Jenkins up . Mary Vann has moved up a notch every time she has shown this top mare and should do well in the future .
The Three-Year-Old Class had seventeen entries that worked hard for the top spot . The class was won by SUN ’ S REFLECTION . ( We regret that complete results were not available on this class .)
Age Stallions proved to be one of the most popular classes of the show , and JOHNNY MIDNIGHT , with Elmore Brock up for Larry and Clinton Gribble of McMinnville , Tennessee , took the top spot . Jerry Derryberry on SETTING SUN ’ S SON tied a good Reserve in this class for Mr . Sam Johnson of Baskerville , Va . C . A . Bobo , who felt at home in this arena , tied third on BOMB ’ S BALLY HOO for Y . Z . Foss and Leland Blount of Bethel , N . C .
Continuing his " winning ways ,” GO BOY ’ S ROYAL HEIR put on one of the most classic performances we have ever seen with Candace Williams up . Candace has " all the keys ” to this great horse and took the Amateur Stallion and Gelding Class in fine form . Mrs . Newton Turrentine , herself an accomplished rider , was a good second on SECOND TIME AROUND , and Regina McLaurin finished third on MIDNIGHT SPOOK for the McLaurin Stables , Raleigh .
Kenneth Burke put on one of the best performances we have seen this year and deserved the distinction of being pulled in by himself to watch the others show as he won the Mare Class on LU ’ S LU LU . This mare was flawless in the preliminary and Kenneth did an excellent job of showing her for F . L . Blount , Bethel , N . C . Second was another top mare , GO BOY ’ S BLACK LABEL , with Donald Paschal up for Dr . and Mrs . C . L . Sexton of Florence , S . C . Third was SUN ’ S ZENITH , a " go-yonder ” mare with Joe Gibbs up for Riddle Olds & Cadillac Co ., Martinsville , Va .
Coming back for another go at it was GO BOY ’ S ROYAL HEIR and Candace Williams in the Amateur Championship . They put on another fine show to tie the blue . Another standout in this class was GREY SON , with Johnny Hooker up . Johnny is from Martinsville , Va ., and did a fine job to tie Reserve to the
World Champion . Also in the running was Mrs . Newton Turrentine on SECOND TIME AROUND . They tied third .
It took a two-horse workout to tie the class in the Junior event . John T . Carter , riding his much-applauded WARLOCK , the Reserve Champion of the World , had to put on the pressure to wrest the Blue from Dudley Sledge riding his fine JET ’ S GO BOY SOU VENIR . It was a great show with both horses doing an excellent job . WARLOCK is now owned by Mr . Frank Parnell of Newbern , Tennessee , and SOUVEN IR is owned by Henson ’ s Walking Horse Stables .
