OLD HICKORY STABLES
Mr. George Lee, well-known Chattanooga area Walking Horse enthusiast, has gotten things moving in fine fashion with thier new trainer, Don Davis. Don is a young fellow with a lot of experience and should do well at their stable in McDonald, Tennessee. Michael Lee, eighteen-year-old son of Mr. Lee and the late Geneva Lee, will assist Don with the training chores. Mike has been riding for several years and has improved greatly this past season. They have just finished a new addition to their stables, which now has over twenty stalls, and have just finished re-building a new nine-horse van. Watch for Old Hickory Stables.
JOHN T. CARTER
We recently heard that John T. Carter has sold his Reserve World Champion Junior Horse, WAR- LOCK, for a very impressive figure. Mr. Russell Waggoner, former owner of this fine horse, has had a lot of offers but Mr. Frank Parnell of Newbern, Tennessee was the man who got the job done. WARLOCK was one of the most talked-about horses at the Celebration and all indications are that he will be a top contender for next year. It is reported that Douglas Wolaver will get him for training.
DAVID WELSH
North Carolina is a fast-moving Walking Horse center, and the news that David Welsh had moved to Mocksville and gone into business for himself was good news indeed to many Carolina people. David has been training for the past four years in New York, and climaxed his activities there by winning the " Horse of the Year” award last year. David and his family have taken up residence in Mocksville and he has leased a fine stable from Mr. Donald Riddle. His services are already in great demand and it appears to have been a good move.
LEESWOOD STABLES
Mr. and Mrs. Cebern Lee, who have been instrumental in increasing interest in the Tennessee Walking Horse in the Northeast, announced that Mr. Sylvester Skirkowski has taken over as head trainer at their Leeswood Stables in Oaks Corners, New York. " Syl,” as he is known to his many friends, is a Tennessee boy with a lot of experience for a young man. He should do an excellent job for the Lees, who have some of the best stock in the country. More on this fine stable later.
R & R STABLES
The R & R Stables of Salem, Missouri has had a very successful first year of showing this season. This new stable should certainly be proud of its accomplishments in its initial year of competition. Trainer Howard Roberts is doing a fine job and the stable is growing rapidly. The top horse showing with the R & R colors so far has been GO BOY’ S HI FLY, an aged stud that Harold Kennedy had for a while. Howard and HI FLY have complemented each other perfectly and are leading threats every time
October, 1967 they enter the show ring. HANDSHAKER’ S JOY, a three-year-old mare, is one of the most exciting show horses in the state. In her last show at Salem, Mo. she walked her way to the blue ribbon over some of the top horses in this area. This mare is in training at the Vic Thompson Stables in Shelbyville, Tenn. Another fine horse in this stable is SUN’ S INSPIR ATION, a magnificent black gelding who was recently purchased by Mrs. Theo Ziske of Salem for her grandson, Phil. Phil will be showing in juvenile and amateur classes.
Plans are now on the drawing board for a new stable to accommodate the numerous Walking Horses in this area.
Jim Reary, who is manager of the stable, has worked hard to develop his riding skills and has now become a fine amateur rider. Jim and his lovely wife Shirley are hard-working young horse enthusiasts who are devoted to Walking Horses. This fine young couple can be counted on to contribute their share to the breed in the very near future.
All interested horse lovers in the Salem area are encouraged to stop by the R & R Stables whenever they can.
JORDAN HOLLOW STABLES
Mr. Everett Shipp has recently returned to Stanley, Virginia, where he has leased the Jordan Hollow Stables of Mr. C. B. Graves, for whom he was formerly manager and trainer for five years.
He brings with him five excellent show prospects, among them those two royal specimens of the Walking Horse breed, ROLLING DUKE and ROLLING DUTCHESS, who are owned by Mr. Robert Harris of Charlottesville, Virginia. In addition to these, he will also train all horses of the C. B. Graves family.
Mr. Shipp plans to exhibit the horses from Jordan Hollow Stables in as many of the Virginia and nearby states’ shows as he possibly can during the remainder of the season. This competent, popular trainer will be a welcome sight back in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
HIGH HAVEN WALKING HORSE STABLE
Things are very busy at Mr. O. L. Hall’ s High Haven Walking Horse Stable, located west of Springfield on Highway 13. Trainer Chester Beshears is getting horses ready for the Missouri State Fair at Sedalia, and it looks like he will give some other Walking Horses some rough competition.
One of their best is DARK MOTION MAKER, a black five-year-old mare that has been ridden very successfully by owner Mr. Hall, winning the Saddle & Sirloin Show at Kansas City and the Grand Championship at Columbia. Chester has done very well this year with MACK K’ S PRINCE, a five-year-old bay MIDNIGHT MACK K gelding owned by Frances Dulin of Brookline, Mo. They won the show at Bolivar, and tied the blue in the Stud and Gelding Class at Columbia.
Mr. Hall has two mares of which he is very proud. One is CRYSTAL’ S FIRST LADY by GO BOY’ S CRY STAL BALL, a black three-year-old that has done
