Lebanon Horse Show Attracts Top Horses; Sensational Shadow Wins Stake
The word for many years, the last twenty-one to be exact, has been that“ the horses that win at Lebanon are hard to beat at the Celebration.” This year appears to be no exception as a host of top horses were introduced at this annual event. Sponsored by the American Legion, this show is well managed and drew a record crowd. The ring had been cut this year and was in excellent shape for the many big-time, horses that were exhibited.
Starting the show in fine form was the Two-Year- Old Stallion Class. There were two pre-show favorites that came on strong for their supporters. Carlton Pitts on GO BOY’ S BLACK ROOSTER, a full brother to BLACK JACK, and Bob Cherry- on TIGER BAY, a top young colt by STATELY GO BOY. made a show of it to tie one-two in a great class. Charlie Bobo was third on TUFF STUFF for G. L. L. Farms.
In the juvenile class Muriel Ann Brinkley from Shelby ville took top honors on THE NEW LOOK. The second place ribbon went to SLTN DUST GAL and Camille Whittle of Etowah, Tennessee, while tying third was Candace Williams on GO BOY’ S EBONY ANGEL. These three young riders are well-known throughout the Walking Horse world for their ability in the saddle. We can look for them to be battling all year long for the top honors at shows all over the Southeast.
In the amateur class, Tony Huber from Moultrie, Georgia, did a superb job riding GO BOY’ S CRYSTAL to win the blue ribbon. Shadowing the winner all the way was SPUR’ S SUPREME and Mrs. Hugh Sample of Murfreesboro. The number three horse in this very competitive class was HANDSHAKER’ S REBEL with Helen Jones of Fayetteville doing the chores.
The Two-Year-Old Walking Mare Class had some top entries with the winner being SASSY SATIN with
Dixie Weaver from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the saddle. The red ribbon winner was HANDSHAKER’ S LADY KIM with popular Doug Wolaver doing the riding. J. T. Leech did a fine job in tying third on EBONY SECRE TARY in this class full of future hopefuls. Many of the horses in this class have the potential to develop into top horses. Their show careers have just begun and with patient and dedicated training they will achieve their measure of success.
The Three-Year-Old Mare Class had some top entries and the old veteran Sam Paschal took the blue on
EBONY’ S DOLLY. Sam is real pleased with the work of this horse and you can look for him to go a long way with her. Tying reserve in this closely contested class was EL DORADO’ S BLACK LABEL and Steve Hill. Buddy Moore of the Cashion Farms guided GO BOYS ANGEL
WINGS to the third spot with some fine exhibiting. The crowd was highly appreciative of this exciting class as some of the top trainers in the country competed for the honors.
In the pony class, Martha Bobo served warning on the top ponies around that she is a real threat for show ring honors this year. This talented exhibitor rode MIKE’ S MIGHTY MAN to the blue ribbon over some stiff competition. The reserve winner in this crowd-pleasing class was Kenny Hale on GO BOY’ S INK SPOT. The third place horse was LADIES MAN with Bobby Simpson in the irons. This promising young rider is from Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The Walking Mare, Four-Years-Old and Over Class was won by the World Grand Champion Three-Year Old Mare of the 1966 Celebration. GO BOY’ S DARK LADY and Horace Young looked as good as ever in capturing the top spot in this class. Donald Paschal took GO BOY’ S BLACK LABEL to the reserve spot behind the World Champion. Paul Smith captured the third ribbon on SUN’ S ANGEL.
Another World Champion showed his wares in the Three-Year-Old Stallion and Gelding Class as Donald Paschal guided EBONY’ S OLD CROW to the blue ribbon. This fine champion of last year has improved and is looking for ever greater honors this year. Tying reserve in this class was Buddy Kirby on SUN’ S GO BOY G. Popular RISING SUN with Charlie Bobo up tied third in this class that had the crowd really cheering.
The stake class was well worth waiting for as Wink Groover really showed everyone something on SENSA TIONAL SHADOW. This beautiful stud is causing a lot of excitement. Since winning the three-year-old championship at Montgomery, Wink has really been exciting the crowds. Sam Paschal on SETTING SUN’ S SENSATION was in the battle for top spot all the way with a superb performance in all three gaits. Doug Wolaver stayed right there with the top two on HAND SHAKER’ S COPY. As you can easily see, this class had some of the top stock and trainers in the South. All of the horses here will be heard from in the future.
Joe Vann Clayton did a fine job in judging this show which saw many top entries competing in class after class. The management of the show did a creditable job in running the show with a few trouble spots.
