The 4-H Club is a nationwide organization of youngsters that is widely acclaimed for the contribution it makes to the moral , spiritual and physical development of its members . An important part of the 4-H program is the activity in horse projects by the youngsters . This phase of the Clubs activities is expanding faster than any other project and the Walking Horse is in an excellent position to make a substantia ] contribution to this program .
Recently at the farm of John Q . Hite in Russellville , Kentucky , 59 4-H Club members and leaders attended an exhibition and discussion of the Tennessee Walking Horse . Mr . Billy Mitchell gave a talk on the Walking Horse and exhibited a fine MIDNIGHT SUN stallion . Some of the topics Mr . Mitchell covered included grooming , clipping , preparing for the show ring , the three gaits , conformation ,
and background of the breed . Literature on the breed was distributed to the youngsters .
The session was held in conjunction with a 4-H Club training program for the youngsters . The children were
most attentive and seemed to really enjoy the discussion of the breed .
In Glascow , Kentucky , at the farm of Marian Ward , 60 4-H Club members attended a similar discussion . The leaders in the club attended to gain knowledge of the breed for future work in club projects . The youngsters were enthusiastic and extremely interested in knowing about the Walking Horse .
Sessions such as the two just mentioned are doing a lot to spread the word about the Tennessee Walking

After my first year in South Carolina I can see why they call the South the “ Sunny South .” The weather is so nice that in the middle of the day we can generally ride in shirt sleeves . When it does turn cool , it ’ s just for a day of two . Due to the deep South weather , our show season has started and will stay in full swing until late
fall .
Recently we visited Barnwell , South Carolina and the family of Herbert Black , Jr . He and his wife , Mary Ellen , have a fine new barn and some good young stock . Last year was Mrs . Black ’ s first year in the show ring and she did well . She is planning on showing her roan three year old gelding this year . Mrs . Black bought this gelding after the Celebration and won the blue at the Evans , Georgia show in the two year old class last fall . Pretty good for an amateur ! The Blacks have four fine children . Their new bam has been a family project . They now have four or five two year olds that they are working themselves . The Blacks feel that if they can keep several colts coming along each year , they should turn up at least one good one a year . This year they already have several good ones . In the pasture they have already picked out two to go under saddle next year . If it weren ’ t for amateurs and people like the Blacks who have their horses for the love of diem , there wouldn ’ t be much of a future in the horse business .
And to speak of the future , Robin and Mary Jane Black will be hard to beat in the juvenile class if they continue to ride like they are now . These two spend many hours on their ponies and Mary Jane has already won one trophy in this division . When they start riding before they start school they are sure going to be able to ride the hair off of those Walking Horses by the time they can climb on one . The Blacks have brought Sonny Sonuner a black two year old gelding named MR . HAPPY to finish up for the show ring and he seems to have all the natural ability needed to make them stop and look at him .
We also picked up a black filly from Mr . T . L . Hutto of New Holland , South Carolina and were pleased to see his fine breeding stock . He has the foundation for a great breeding herd and he has some of the colts from his fine stallion that will go under saddle next year . MAY S GLORY GIRL is a good-sized filly with the best breeding . The Huttoes drove us through their pasture to see their brood mares and they have some fine ones whose papers Tk ^^o ’ s Who in the Walking Horse stud book , hey have several mares who are dut to foal any time . I
t0 ^ear ^at one mareJ a daughter of MID NIGHT SUN out of a mare by MIDNIGHT SUN lost tr were really looking forward to that colt . Mr Hutto ’ s son attends the Camden Military Academy
ana ako enjoys riding horses . Last summer he visited Joe
C k Srrum^ ^ ° r a while and enjoyed his stay there very ' much . I he popularity of the Walking Horse is spreading as ere and people like the Huttoes are helping it spread .
