replied“ but I have done a lot of judging of small one night shows and 1 know what I am looking for”.“ That’ s what we want to talk about Ol’ buddy”, said Mr. Bartlett as he held up his hand for the floor.“ Lonny... we have horse shows and then we have horse shows... if you know what I mean?”“ This show” he went on,“ is one of the most important early season shows in the Walking Horse business. A winner here has a head start on the National Festival”.“ In fact,” he added,“ it paves the way for a successful summer”. Lonny said,“ well I know that it...”, Mr. Bartlct, broke in and pointed out that a lot of people had a big interest in this particular show and that it was very important for certain people to win in particular classes.
Lonny, feeling a bit uneasy, filled up his glass again. The three men went on telling him how important it was that a certain horse win the big stake and said that they would make it worth his time to tic the right horse. In an effort to appear knowledgable of all this discussion, Lonny laughted and said...“ You don’ t want to fix the show... you just want to make sure the right horse wins. Is that it?”“ Yeah”, said Mr. Bartlett.“ That’ s about it. I was sure I could count on you”.
Lonny leaned up against the wall and said,“ well just how do I go about tying the horse you want if he is getting beat?” Mr. Bartlet laughed and said,“ It’ s all in how you work’ em Lonny boy! The only real threat that our horse has is that sorrel stud of“ Cowboy” Marions. He tied third at the Festival and our horse was fifth, but we hope you can fix that.” He added,“ you can beat him in the workout if you have a long second go-round. We will tell our boy to hold his horse back and then you have a third workout between four horses. By that time ol’“ Cowboy’ s” horse will be worn out and we can win it easy”.“ Oh yes,” he added“ be sure to hold your running walk call on the reverse until our boy gets into the turn so he can make one good pass. This will make it look good to the crowd”.
Lonny hadn’ t told Helen much about what had taken place in the motel room that afternoon. He had taken a cold shower to throw off the effects of the drinks he had. Helen didn’ t approve of his drinking at all, especially after their Christmas party and— least of all at a time like this. They hurried to get dressed for dinner and the show.
As Lonny Barnes looked around the show ring he was
amazed by it’ s size. He smiled and removed his hat as his name echoed around the big arean... as the announcer said,“ introducing our Walking Horse Judge... Mr. Lonny Barnes”.
