A five-vear-old gelding, IMMORTAL SUN, will be ridden in the Men’ s Amateur class by Paul Wiener, owner
of Circle Four Stables.
SOCIETY’ S BLUE VELVET, a half-sister to EBONY’ S BLUE VELVET out of the same dam, is the Circle Four entry in the Four-Year-Old Mare class, an Mr. Shivers seems optimistic about her chances at the
big show. MIDNIGHT PAT H, Mr. Shivers’ five-year-old stud,
will be his stake horse this vear. PAT is by MIDNIGHT SUN out of MITCH ALLEN, and has fourteen foundation horses on his papers. A pulled shoulder muscle has kept him out of competition for a while, but Mr. Shivers expects to have him in excellent shape for the Celebration. Look for him— he’ s a lot like old WILSON ALLEN
in appearance.
In addition to his Celebration prospects, Mr. Shivers is cautiously excited about a bay two-vear-old stud that he is working now that belongs to him and A. D. Hampton, Lewisburg, Tenn. This MIDNIGHT SUN-bred colt is out of“ a big mare” and promises to be a good horse in every way: size, ability, and stride. Mr. Shivers emphasized that this colt is not for sale.
Also being watched carefully is a January filly, coming-two, that was actually started too early due to a mixup on the birth date. By the time the mistake was discovered, the little filly was walking too good to leave alone. The owner has been offered a nice price( rumor says $ 4,000) but refuses to sell. Never shown, she will debut on the Florida Circuit, working her way back to the Celebration next year. She’ s a bluish-roan with a lot of white.
With at least five good horses to take to the Celebration this year, and two very promising youngsters working, it looks like a rosy future for the Circle Four Farms.
Valleyview Stables
Dr. J. D. Bush of Gadsden, Alabama, has reason to be proud of his accomplishments in the Walking Horse business. He has been in the business since 1953 and has been active in many areas including showing and breeding. His trainer, Peck Stone, has been with him for seven years and has done an excellent job.
Dr. Bush, a Pathologist, doesn’ t have much time to ride but when he does he is partial to SUN DUST QUEEN, a big time bay mare that he has been showing with good success for several years.
A lot of talk has generated around SUNDUST DIXIE, a real good four-year-old bay stallion that is owned by Dr. Bush. Peck has worked this horse carefully and has him about right.
Col. and Mrs. C. W. Daugette have been long-time customers of Peck Stone and their children have done quite well under his tutelage. Burt Daugette has shown many horses out of Peck’ s bam and her sister Ann and brother Clarence have amateur horses there now. Ann will be showing GO BOY’ S JOY, her black mare that is undefeated this year and Clarence will be showing ELDO RADO BOY, a bay four-year-old that shows well.
Peck is standing a stud named MIDNIGHT BLACK BABY, that is siring some good colts. He has a pony named BLACK BABY’ S PRIDE that shows a lot of promise and BLACK BABY’ S PAT, a good two-year-old stud, is doing well. 6
In addition to the horses owned by Dr. Bush Pe V ■ also working some outside horses. Gery Newton of Birmh, * ham has a three-year-old stud in training and Sevp l colts belonging to Dr. Lily of Ohio. He has seventeT horses in training and about five are Celebration bound
Lawnvale Farms
Up in Gainesville, Virginia, trainer Ernest Bugg ha had a run of bad luck. By the time the weather broke in his part of the country and he got his stock about right to show, he ran amuck with a particular mount and broke his elbow. This came at the most inopportune time for him and Mr. E. Carl Hengen, owner of Lawnvale Farms since he will not be able to show at the Celebration.’
Ernest had some good stock ready to go including several top horses sired by their world champion B. MAJOR WILSON. They have had an excellent season breeding this fine stallion and all indications are that he has added greatly to the Walking Horse activity in that part of the
country.
We are indeed sorry that Ernest had this accident but he will be at the Celebration and will probably get to see some of his stock show. He has tried to place some of their horses with other trainers in order to get them shown.
Leech Stables
As usual, J. T. and Marianne Leech are working hard to get ready for the Celebration. SUN’ S MARCHING MAN will be aiming at the three-year-old title with Marianne Leech in the saddle, and EBONY’ S SECRE TARY will be in the two-year-old class with J. T. Leech riding.
We recently learned that Ray Fogarty of Corpus Christi, Texas, has taken a top colt to the Leech Stables. This is a red roan three-year-old that has a lot of potential.
A question mark arises whenever talk turns to SHOT GUN, a highly regarded three-year-old stallion by SUN’ S BIG SHOT that Jimmy Gray has been working. Jimmy, brother to Marianne Leech, broke this horse himself and has tentative plans to show him. They say he is a“ top horse” that can really get the job done.
Walk-A-Way Farms
One of the most unique Walking Horse operations we have ver seen in the Walk-A-Way Farms in N. Wilkesboro, N. C. Mr. Lewis Jenkins is the originator of this
facility and he made the best use of available space we have ever seen. His stable is constructed under the warehouse of his wholesale hardware company.
His family is all horse-minded but daughter Mary
Vann has been carrying the banner for the past two years. She will be showing SUN’ S SENSATION, a top Juvenile horse, again this year and Lewis will be showing THE
SUN’ S TOP BRASS, a fine Amateur Horse. Both o these two should do well at the Celebration. It would take a lot of“ father-daughter” combination to beat these
two. Their trainer is Jack Parker, a well known Walking
Horse trainer from North Carolina, who has a reputation havin £“ made” some of the best horses in that pait o the country.
