One of the foremost trainers in the country is Jimmy Holloway of West, Mississippi. Born in Daleville, Mississippi( right outside Meridian), Jimmy has been a horse lover all his life. As a boy he had some horses which he called“ pure mustangs,” and added that his father always had some good saddle horses around.
The first saddle Jimmy Holloway ever owned was purchased by him as a kid in Kemper County. He planted an acre of corn, cultivated it carefully, and sold it for $ 79.00. With this money he bought his first saddle.
Mr. J. H. Noblin gave Jimmy his start training Walking Horses in Lauderdale, Mississippi. CAESAR’ S GHOST, a gelding owned by Mr. Gibling, was one of the prominent horses in the barn at this time. Mr. Noblin and Jimmy were also working a great mare called MAUD MULLER for Mr. Linwood Hightower of Stanton, Mississippi. Many readers will recall a horse called TIME RECORD who never failed to give the spectators a thrill.
In 1946 Jimmy went to work for C. G. Smith and Harold Wise of Blytheville, Arkansas. This was a wellknown training stable and sales barn back during the 1940’ s. It was here in Blytheville that he made the horse called JOY BOY who was later sold several times.
1948 was an important year for Jimmy Holloway. He was working for Mr. Pointer of Como, Mississippi, at the
12 time. Jimmy took time out from his hectic schedule of working horses to walk down the aisle with Bernice Wedgworth. Bernice has been a tremendous help to Jimmy and he says he couldn’ t have made it without her. Jimmy and Bernice have a son, Randy, who will be eleven in September. Randy is an excellent rider and has shown twice this year to win two blues aboard CHAR LIE’ S ROYAL FLUSH, owned by Mr. Maddox.
From 1952 until 1954 Jimmy took time out once again from his horses to serve his country in the Army. Upon his return he moved to his present location where he took over the management and operation of Mr. C. D. Maddox Stables. During the first few years there Annis Guess made
many sensational rides on PRIDE OF JACKSON and MISSISSIPPI SENSATION under Jimmy’ s guidance. MISSISSIPPI SENSATION was one of the greatest ladies’ horses of all time. At this same period Mr. Maddox was showing SPUR’ S MAGIC MAN, which he purchased from Judy Knowles. GOVERNOR WRIGHT was another top amateur horse in the barn. Jimmy made REBEL MISS, Mr. Charlie’ s famous mare, about this time, too.
One of the greatest horses Jimmy has ever made was MYSTERY’ S BIG SHOT— a big bay stallion with a bold lick and a lot of motion. Owned by Mr. Maddox, BIG SHOT was shown in amateur and professional classes and
