Dear Sir:
“ The greatest pleasure horse in the world is the Tennessee Walker. Actually I believe, if trained, they could do better than some of the horses I have seen on race tracks. They can be a fine working horse and a good game horse. Even a horse that can be used in the mountains for hunting.
Many people go to a horse show, a stake class and sec the fine stake horses and then are disappointed when they buy a Tennessee Walker that doesn’ t have the stake horse gaits. These gaits arc artificial and very few people can afford to train them and keep a stake horse. We must educate the public that average Tennessee Walker is a pleasure horse and wc should see more in print that the stake horse gait shows the efforts of many hours of extensive training.
A new foal in the Walker class will be dropped with the true gaits. If not,
34 with a little effort, these pits can be brought out. However, if the tiue Tennessee Walking gaits cannot be developed. vou will still get a better n4p than from any other horse alive. 1 he average disposition of a Tennessee Walker is such that it isn’ t many years after thev are trained for riding that you will have a fine child’ s horse.
One must realize that with horses as with people, there are idiots and morons. If one is unfortunate enough to get this type of horse no amount of training will develop anything as the potential to remember is not there.
One of our Western horse trainers starts out by teaching a young horse to hop into a pickup as the first lesson. If the horse is not gentle enough and will not take this training, he will sell tht ' horse in auction ring rather than train it any farther.
Our Tennessee Walkers load this way and all of them have been trained to shoot off of. Again, the pleasure horse is a true Tennessee Walker. The Tennessee Walking stake horse is equivalent to the Rolles Royce in the automobile field with many thousands of dollars worth of accessories. If you are going to buy a horse be sure it is a Tennessee Walker. I think a Purebred horse is cheaper to own than a broncho.”
