Buddy Kirby piloted BIG DADDY to win the STAL LION & GELDING CLASS. This is a real nice horse, folks, and we will hear more from him, I’ m sure. Coming in right behind BIG DADDY was HANDSHAKER S EAGLE, with Jack Darnell up for Candace McCallister.
One class that always generates excitement is the OPEN AMATEUR WALKING HORSE CLASS. MR. PIDDLEY, expertly shown by owner-rider Sam Hall, of Leighton, Ala., finally proved the one to beat as he emerged the victor over some of the greatest amateur walking horses in the country. BEL AIRE’ S BONANZA and veteran rider Roy Davis of Bel Aire Stables were reserve. Third award went to the beautiful MOONGLOW, JR., with owner-rider Burt Daugette, Gadsden, Ala., up.
Rov Davis. Bel Aire Stables, also won the blue on BEL AIRE’ S GO GETTER in the WALKING HORSE, AMA TEUR RIDERS 50 YEARS & OVER. Dr. T. W. Whitfield, Dalton. Ga., was close on his heels with SHADOW’ S SENORITA. This is a class everyone enjoys and the exhibitors really put on a good show.
First to DEEP VELVET with Elmore Brock up for Mr. and Mrs. Willard Chandler, Sparta. Tenn., in the WALKING HORSE. FOUR YEARS OLD & UNDER, George Livingston and MIDNIGHT HOLIDAY tied reserve for owner J. Marlon Burkholder. Third award went to Kathy Thompson up on SUNDUST SILVER SLIP PER. for Thompson Stables, Shelbyville, Tenn.
PLEASURE WALKING HORSE CLASS. These horses are ridden for pleasure during the week and shown on the weekends. Most of them were good enough to be show horses all week long. This class was tied with STAR DUST winner, Billy Morgan, Ringgold, Ga., up, and CITATION, Cathy Stone up, took reserve.
Evervone waited around in almost freezing weather to see the thrill-packed CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS STAKE. When the dust settled and all the horses were lined up,
the judge decided on a workout. All those in the workout were big name horses, and the choice was not easy.
A horse shoe of roses, emblematic of Grand Championship honors, presented by the renowned Mr. Sam Paschal, fell to BEL AIRE’ S MERRY BOY, with a happy Wink Groover up for Bel Aire Stables. Reserve went to JOHNNY MIDNIGHT, shown by Elmore Brock for Larry and Clinton Gribble of McMinnville, Tenn. Just before the last class, a filly colt by Stately Go Boy was given away by the Horse Show Committee.
A good time was had by all. and all will be back next year, I’ m sure. Complete results are listed in Horse Show Results of this issue.

“ WAY DOWN SOUTH”
By Janie Bramlctt
Hello again from“ Way Down South.” Trainers arc busy and tension has been high as the Big Three— Jackson, Baton Rouge, and Montgomery— have been held.
Trainers’ minds and efforts have also turned to next summer’ s show stock. Work is already well underway preparing this year’ s yearlings for next year’ s two-year-old classes. It almost seems impossible to watch yearlings under saddle now, and then visualize what they’ ll look like in the show rings next season. This just goes to prove that there is never a vacation in the life of a horse trainer, and that maybe too many trainers receive too much criticism and not enough praise and gratitude. Let’ s all try to remember that those fine show ' horses didn’ t get that way all by themselves. We owe our trainers a little more than that monthly check— a little monthly praise and gratitude for the work and time that they donate to the improvement of our horses.
I wasn’ t able to attend the Mobile. Alabama, show but from what I hear they really had a great show,“ ay Down South” salutes all the winners. I know that his show was a very special one for Mr. Lloyd Wood of uscaloosa, Ala. Mr. Wood won the Men’ s Amateur C iass on his newly acquired CLOWN’ S SPUR. Mr. V > > od bought this great four-year-old stud from Hershel 1-bey during the Celebration, and the Mobile show- market, the entrance of Mr. Wood and CLOWN’ S SPUR into the amateur ranks.
