lion named Handshaker’ s Ba^e that has exceUen^ prospects. Eagle is owned by Mr. McCALLISTER of Anniston. Famous for his ability to work with Amateurs and Juveniles, Jack will welcome the MAL GRAHAM family back to his stable this year. Mrs. Graham will be showing a horse that could be a " big surprise” for 1966. This is a big-lick roan gelding that can really get the job done. RAYE Graham will again be showing her Sun’ s Paperdoll and Phil’ s Go Boy. Also in the Amateur class will be JEANNE ALLEN who will be showing her strawberry roan gelding. Jack has sixteen horses in training and, since this is a part-time activity( Jack has a full-time job in Huntsville), he will be spending a lot of " extra hours” doing what he loves the most... training Walking Horses.
Also located at the Jack Darnell stable facilities is a wellknown Middle Tennessee Walking Horse trainer, Mr. FRANY BURNUM, who is working fulltime as a farrier and trainer about eight horses.
COOLEY STABLES
The Walking Horse World should hear a lot about the Cooley Stables of Boaz, Alabama, this year, due to the efforts of one of the best young men in the business. DON BELL, who has quite a varied background for his 23 years, came to work for Dr. and Mrs. W. L. COOLEY last fall and is making excellent progress. With sixteen horses in training, Don is taking his time to develop a string of top stock. We saw him work several of his better horses and were pleased with the condition of his stock and the way way that he is training.
Heading the list of potentials for Cooley stables is Major’ s Image, a good three-year-old stud owned by Dr. GILLESPY and Dr. Cooley. Image is an exceptionally fine horse with plenty of action and speed. He has three good gaits and should be a real threat in his class. Don also has an aged mare that has attracted a lot of attention? Setting Sun Supreme, owned by Dr. Cooley, was working well when we saw her. This sorrel mare is a good one.
Heading his list of two-year-olds is a sorrel stud colt by Big Man’ s Citation. He is owned by JACK McBRAYER of Dothan, Alabama, and appears to be ready for the " gate to open.” He also has several other good prospects including two black colts by Midnight Beau. The filly, owned by ED BROUGHTON of Perdue Hill, is a beautiful colt and the stud, owned by JAMES WHITTACKER of Cristview, is one of the most loose-jointed colts we have ever seen. Also... Dr. C. C. ERWIN of Crestview, Florida, has a good black stud colt in training. Don is working his horses with the help of Mr. ALBERT BYRON, a well-known Walking Horse personality who has worked with some of the best in past years. Together they should produce some stock to put Cooley Stables up there with the best.
JACK WARREN STABLES
From Middle Tennessee comes news about one of the most noted professional trainers in the business JACK WARREN. This trainer has had about as many top horses as any man in the Walking Horse fi and 1966 will be no exception. It is surprise note the scope of his training activities. In his h t0 in Spring Hill, Tennessee, he has fifty-seven ho *** in training and a staff of five good men assisting v 6s These men- FRANK McMINN, JAMES CARDS’
JOHN LEE DAVIS, WILLIE PAUL DAVIS a DAVID CULBASON— are all experienced groud men and have their hands full helping Mr. Warr with all the duties of managing a stable this size With over twenty Amateur and Juvenile horses now in training, Jack is kept busy assisting his riders a well as training horses. Imagine... 20 Amateur Horses!
First on the agenda is Golden Souvenir, the 1965 World Champion Gelding owned by Mr. and Mrs. A. R DALTON of Creve Coeur, Missouri. He has had a good rest during the winter and spring training indicates that he should be strong and able for the coming season.
The 1965 Reserve Champion Walking Pony( Riders 14 and Under), Sun’ s Gold Dust, owned by CHARLIE WILLIAMSON of Brentwood, Tennessee, is now in training with Jack, and will be shown by Mr. Williamson’ s daughter SUZANNE this year. We saw her work this fancy pony and believe this team will make a good try at a lot of blue ribbons.
W. T. BAYNARD of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a well-known Amateur exhibitor, will be showing a newcomer for him... Thunderball. This sorrel mare is a four-year-old and Jack feels that she is a good one. Dr. W. H. HILL of Atlanta will again be riding his Falcon D. He tied well with this sorrel stud last year and should do well again this season.
In the two-year-old class, Jack says that he is biding his time. He does not believe in pushing a young horse too hard unless it has the natural ability to work well. He pointed with pride, however, to one such colt that he feels is one of the best around. She is a blue roan filly with a black mane and tail and is loose, proud, and as natural as a colt can get. This Midnight Sun colt is owned by Mr. M. G. WIL LIAMS of Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Jack also has a good bay stud owned by JESS JUNIOR MORTON of Spring Hill. He is by Tombstone and has the ways of his illustrious sire. Jack will also make a lot of noise in the Age Mare class with Ebony’ s Black Lady, owned by Red Bridge Stables of Kansas City, Missouri. This fine black mare has had a deserving rest and is reported to be strong and better than ever.
The Warren Stables is standing Go Boy’ s Southern Sun, a nine-year-old black stud owned by JOE RAINES of Birmingham, Alabama. His stud fee is $ 100, payable when the colt comes. This rounds out the complete Walking Horse activities of the Jack Warren Stables.
