Arming HERSHEL TALLEY STABLES It looks as if a lot of people will point their fingers at the VOICE this season and say, "You let the best one get away.” This is exactly what we did when we gave away Mack K’s Gratis at the Celebration last year. We wanted to give away a top colt, and from what we saw recently he is just that. He was named by our Office Manager, BESS FAULKNER (the name means "gift”), and Hershel has decided to show him under this name. Gratis has turned out to be a beautiful deep sorrel and is about as good as any two-year-old we have seen this year. Hershel says he is the best two-year-old he has ever had. Gratis now belongs to Mr. LURLIE ELLENBURG of Arab, Alabama, and Mr. HERSHEL TALLEY. The "big horse” of the Talley Stables is, of course, Clown’s Spur, the fantastic Junior horse that made such a late-season reputation last year (Hershel was prevented from showing him in the Celebration due to an eye injury). He is better than ever and ready for competition in the four-year-old division. Hershel is not exactly "afoot” in the three-year- old class, either. He showed us a sorrel stud with a white mane and tail that could shake some people up. He is owned by Dr. JIM YEGERT of Blounts- ville and is named Clown’s Image. Watch for him, too! Thirty horses are a lot for any training operation and with three helpers Hershel spends a lot of time in the saddle at Baileyton, Alabama. VALLEY VIEW STABLES From Stuart, Virginia, comes news that EVERETT MAJORS, well-known young Walking Horse trainer, has opened a new training operation. They have a twenty-four-stall stable and at present are working eighteen head of stock. Owner- of the stable is Mr. JAMES C. JOYCE of Stuart, Virginia. Some of his better stock at this stage include a three-year-old Go Boy stud colt, and five two-year-old colts. In the Juvenile Class, the Valley View Stables will be rep resented by JIMMY JOYCE, who will be riding Sun’s Hullabaloo. We will have more news on this new Walking Horse operation later on. JACK DARNELL STABLES LATE ITEM!!! While we were making such a fuss over this two-year-old stallion, DOROTHY (Mrs. HERSHEL) TALLEY put us all in the shade by announcing the birth of Miss NANETTE TALLEY. Born April 19, Nanette weighed six pounds, fourteen ounces. A pretty little filly she is, too! Congratulations, Hershel and Dorothy. May, 1966 During the 1965 season there was a black stud horse that was consistent in putting the presure on every top stake horse he met this side of the Cele bration. Shadow’s Nomad, a five-year-old stud, train ed by JACK DARNELL and owned by Mr. BOB ALLEN of Fayetteville, Tennessee, won seventeen stake class blues and was never tied below third before the World Championship. Of this horse, Jack says, "He is the most consistent three-gaited Walk ing Horse I have ever ridden.” What are his pros pects for 1966? Both his trainer and his owner be lieve that he can compete with the best showing. Remember Shadow’s Nomad! The Darnell Stables, located in the thriving and growing metropolis of Huntsville, Alabama, is well known in the Walking Horse business. At present Jack has several outstanding horses including In vasion’s Headman, a top two-year-old (I repeat . . . top) bay stallion that is owned by WOODROW GORD of Huntsville. He also has a bay four-year-old stal- 61
