Bits & Spurs

By Sharon Terry Box 1178 State College , Miss .
Mississippi has really had its share of winter . We seldom have any snow , but during the past two weeks we have had a blizzard nearly every day and the snow is about ten inches deep at this writing .
KENNETH WOMBLE is now working at Hideaway Stables in Batesville , Mississippi . Owned by FRED BAILEY of Lambert , Hideaway has a brand new show bam , one of the finest in the state . In addition to working the Baileys ’ horses , Kenneth will be training outside horses also .
Drifting on to the Alabama scene , ADRIAN LIGHT is now operating a public training stable at BOB RIGSBY Stables in Huntsville . Bob has quite a few top horses , including a sorrel three-year-old stallion by Mack K .
My good friend D ’ LEESE WILLIAMSON of Jackson , Mississippi , is proud to announce the birth of the first colt sired by her World ’ s Champion Bomb ’ s Ballyhoo . Out of her Midnight Sun mare , Flicka , the colt is a beautiful sorrel stallion with a narrow strip .
The following is my mother ’ s commentary on a
visit she made to Joe Webb ’ s stables early this year . " I had a nice visit with JOE WEBB on January
19th . Joe was on jury duty , but after 5 PM when he was free he went to a lot of trouble to put on a private horse show just for me . I saw the best group of horses I ’ ve seen lately in one barn . First was a threeyear-old mare out of Midnight Satin by Rodger ’ s Perfection , owned by Dr . RODGERS . This mare will be a sensation when Joe brings her out — she just does not know how fast she can go and she does everything right . Next Joe worked a two-year-old pony out of Genius Lovely Night by Perfection — black , cocky , and going like an aged horse . Special ’ s Angel , MARIAN RUSSELL ’ s mare , put on a great show and has developed tremendous speed . The Great Contender worked next and looked every inch a champion . Joe brought out The Entertainer and the way this great horse has developed since Montgomery is unbelievable . He looked capable of walking off with many three-year-old championships and already has a perfect canter . It was a thrill to see him move and to watch Joe call on him for more and get more — wait rtil you see him ! Next Joe brought out a beautiful black two-year-old stud , Perfection ’ s Senor . This colt is out of the great show mare we owned and sold to Dr . Rodgers , Peg ’ s Senorita , and by Perfection . He is owned by Dr . Rodgers and Joe Webb . Senor was the most beautiful baby colt I have ever seen and , in October when I saw him under saddle for the first time , 1 was speechless . As Joe warmed him up in a flat walk , I looked for faults , but found none . Joe grinned a little when he called on Senor for a running walk . Then he brought Senor by in a pass that made goosepimples pop out all over me . I ’ ve never had a horse excite me like this colt did . Joe says he is the greatest horse he has ever ridden , and I know he is the greatest colt I have ever seen . Since Peg is Senor ’ s dam , I claim some sort of interest ( maybe one boot ?) in him . This visit was truly memorable .”
SIS HARDY Stables , in Cleveland , recently sold two top horses , Magic ’ s Black Knight and a two-yearold filly , Perfection ’ s Priss , to Mr . N . W . HUTCHINS of Mobile , Alabama . Mr . Hutchins left Priss in training with Sis in Cleveland . Sis has another good threevear-old filly , Shadow ’ s Debutante , a sorrel with a big lick and a lot of motion . MIMI DORSSETT ’ s horse , Knockout ’ s Black Gold , is working good and should make a good juvenile horse for her this summer . Sis ’ s pride and joy is her two-year-old bay stud colt , Duke Giovanni , by her stud , Duke of Society . Sis has
many fine show horses , brood mares , and colts . Her colts include a weanling by Perfection and two by
Duke of Society .
This summer I hope to be showing a mare I have raised , Go Boy ’ s Storm Warning . Stormy is the best prospect I have ever ridden . Now four years old , Stormy had some rought luck as a two-year-old when she was badly injured . This injury has kept her out of the show ring until now , but with a little luck she will soon make her debut — right and ready !
