Port Orange Stables Owner Purchases 1965 World Champion
Right— After the sale, the principles line up with the big bay stallion just outside the stable. Below right— Harold Wise, A / Kroesche, Ellen Metzger, Gottlob Koenig and Joe Wright terminate the sale.
This past June 5, the VOICE office was contacted regarding a proposed newsworthy transaction to take place at the Harold Wise Stables in Lewisburg. Indeed it was newsworthy! Triple Threat became the property of Mr. GOTTLOB KOENIG and his daughter, ELLEN METZGER, of Port Orange, Florida. On hand to make the sale were owners Joe Wright, Nacogdoches, Texas, and A1 Kroesche, Dallas, Texas. Not present was Mr. Bob Guinn of Savannah, Tennessee. Mr. Harold Wise handled the transaction. The price? A figure approaching § 130,000.00 was mentioned from a reliable source.
There is much to be said about the decision of Mr. Koenig to purchase Triple Threat. His whole approach to the big stallion was based on a colt that he owned that was sired by Triple Threat before he became World Champion. Now, as a two-year-old, this colt, named Triple Threat Again, is being described as the " greatest two-year-old ever to be sired.” This is a big order, but he defies comparison. To make matters even more complicated for two-year-old entries, this colt is now in training with Doug Wolaver and is aiming at 1966 show ring honors. Have we seen him? Yes! And he is everything he is touted to be! Big... strong... a picture of his famous sire. And... he has taken to training like a " duck to water” with every move being something special.
In discussing the story with Mr. Koenig and Ellen Metzger, we learned that they are not newcomers to the horse business. He is a retired manufacturer and distributor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and while living there established the Evergreen Farms. He has owned and sold some of the highest-priced gaited horses in the country, including Beau Fortune, Sea Sprite and Abie’ s Royal Irishman, well-known horses in Gaited Horse circles. His daughter began showing gaited horses as a youngster. They entered the Walking Horse business after retiring to Port Orange, Florida( near Daytona), and their first horse was Merry Serenade, a mare that Ellen showed. This mare is now at the Wise Stables and recently had a colt by Rock M Eldorado. The
