The Bitting Rig, a favorite training devise of Gaited
Horse trainers, also has a place in the training program
of Tennessee Walking Horses. A check of several top
trainers reveals that there is diverse opinions regarding
the necessity of, and requirements for, using this type of
rig for our horses, especially for young stock. The Bitting
Rig, by definition, is a devise designed to acquaint the
horse with having a bit in his mouth and to teach him
to accept the bit and the proper position of both the head
and neck in relation to the bit, reins and other aids used
in the training and riding process.
Discussion with established Tennessee Walking Horse
trainers indicates that many types of rigs are utilized in
conjunction with the early training of the horse. One
trainer states emphatically that he does not attempt to use
a Bitting Rig or similar devise unless he finds that the
particular horse in question has not responded correctly
