SECOND ANNUAL MID WEST WALKING HORSE SALE
NEW FACILITIES — A new auction area had been erected in front of the main stable at Red Bridge for the 2nd Annual MIDWEST Walking Horse Sale .
October 18th was a big day at the Red Bridge Stables in Kansas City , Missouri . The event was the second annual Mid West Walking Horse Sale conducted by Mr . S . W . Beech , Jr . of Lewisburg , and Mr . Pete Yokley of Pulaski , Tennessee , and Dr . Ralph E . Baney , owner of Red Bridge Stables of Kansas City . It didn ’ t take long after the last horse was sold to determine that the sale had been a huge success and that this sale should definitely be an annual event .
Held during the week of the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show in Kansas City , this sale has proven two things . First , it has proven again that the popularity and market for Tennessee Walking Horses in the Mid- West is getting bigger and better every year . Secondly , it has proven that a successful walking horse sale can be conducted in the Mid-West , with top prices being paid for good stock .
Since the 1965 fall sale , the growing interest of buyers and consignors has insured the popularity of the Mid- West Walking Horse Sale . Dr . Baney , owner of Red Bridge Stables said that no advance notice was given to walking horse owners asking for consignments to this particular sale since Red Bridge Stables was offering practically all of the horses which could be sold in one day . Yet when the catalogue was mailed out to other stables and prospective buyers throughout the country , there was an influx of calls and telegrams from would-be consignors . The management could have at least one hundred more horses consigned to the sale , had the auction been open for public consignors . This is further proof that there is a need for such a sale in the Mid- West . A limited number of consigned horses were accepted and sold ; just enough to round out a one day sale .
There were a large number of buyers from thirteen different states and the prices paid for horses were very comparable to those paid at the larger sales during the Celebration and other sales in the south . Because of the growing interest in states west of the Mississippi , the Red Bridge Stables , in cooperation with Mr . S . W . Beech and Pete Yokley , is planning to inaugurate an early spring sale , as well as making the fall sale an annual event . The date for the 1967 spring sale has not as yet been set , but this sale will be open to consignors throughout the country .
Despite a chilly day on Dctober 18th , spectators and buyers at the Mid-West Walking Horse sale were reasonably comfortable under the new red and white marquee covering the bleachers and sawdust ring . This will be a permanent feature of every sale .
Mr . Bud Henson , owner of Cedar Creek Stables , Hen House super markets and restaurants in Kansas City , provided the food concession stand and offered a luncheon menu of deliciously barbequed chicken , baked beans , potato salad , hamburgers , and coffee , all day .
Highlight of the sale was a drawing for “ WHITE CHRISTMAS ,” a registered Tennessee Walking Horse stud colt . Names for the drawing were supplied through the sale of Holy Land Christmas cards , which are the instrument through which funds are derived to support some 350 children in Dr . Baney ’ s orphanage in Bethlehem , Jordan .
