1966-Voice Of The Tennessee Walking Horse 1966 April Voice RS | Page 7

the winter by GR1BBLE, LOWE and LOWE of McMinnville, Tennessee, and was moved to the ELMORE BROCK Stables in Sparta, Tennes see. Mr. Brock did extremely well in training him and the horse was recently sold for (and this is bam talk) $50,000 to Dr. P. W. RATTON of Memphis. We asked Steve Hill if he were this kind of horse, and Steve said that in his opinion he was "the best Midnight Sun colt ever foaled.” We have seen him work and he looks great. Of course, there will be others in top form, such as Go Boy’s Big Shot, Invasion’s Shadow, King of the Road, Society Sun, Go Boy’s Ridge Runner, Bel Aire’s Merry Me, Go Boy’s Miss Cindy, Merry’s Gold Sun, Shadow’s Country Girl, Sun’s September Song, Go Boy’s Raven and Go Boy’s Bomb er, just to mention a few that tied consistently last year. In addition to this crop of well- known horses, there will doubtless be a few surprises that we have not even heard of as yet. What about Junior Horses and Aged stock? This remains to be seen! Talk centers around a handful of contenders such as Go Boy’s Sun Dust, Johnny Midnight, Go Boy’s Royal Heir and some others, but here, too, there could be some sleep ers such as Mack K’s Big Story (a great horse not to be forgotten), and Dean’s Boss Man (you have read about him). Shadow’s King Cotton, Shaker’s Shocker, Sun Dust Precis ion, Handshakers Rebel, Shadow’s Motion Man and Perfection’s Hust- ler are just a few of the horses mov ing up to the four-year-old bracket that will show improvement this year. All in all, it looks like an in teresting season. Speaking of "top horses” . . . we would like to give all of you some thing to think about regarding your horse-training activities for 1966. In our opinion, for what it is worth, many of the top horses that were exhibited at the Celebration this past year, and we are referring to the winners as well as the losers, did not appear to be at their peak of perfection. It may be wise to con sider the training tactics of those involved in other areas of profes sional athletics, i. e.: Boxing, Track, and team sports. We all know that a top athlete can train to the point of being "over the hill” at the time of the contest. This is to say that he trains too hard and becomes April, 1966 stale and by the time the "big show” comes, he is past his peak of per fection. It is awfully hard to time your training activities just right when you are getting a horse ready for top showring competition. We know you all have a reputation to main tain and must have your stock good enough to win his share during the year, leading up to the Celebration. Perhaps, however, it would be better to get a good horse beat early in the year, knowing full well that you" still have something left, than to overtrain him and lose (or at least make a poor showing) at the World Championships. A lot of people say we ALL put too much emphasis on the Celebra tion. I say it is the undisputed "Olympics and World Series” of the Walking Horse world and cannot be emphasized too much. However, it appears almost impossible for a horse to be kept at peak condition ing all season and still have his best left for this big test in September. When that gate opens, signaling the beginning of another anxiously- awaited Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, I, for one, would like to see the best selection of top Walking Horses ever assem bled. I would like to see them in good shape, doing three gaits and performing with rhythm and motion with every step. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! Hitch in line ... saves time. On target everytlme.
