WILLIAM DANIEL CRUTCHER,
more commonly known as BILL,
will observe his thirty-first birth
day this month, but unfortunately
he will not have much time to cele
brate. Bill has twenty-three horses
in training at present and with nine
two-year-olds under the saddle he
is kept plenty busy at the Idlehour
Stables.
However, Bill is no stranger to
work around this time of year. He
has been connected with barns and
horses since an early age. He was
born on a farm in Lewisburg, Ten
nessee, on April 20, 1935, the son
of EDD and AGNES Crutcher. It
was on this farm that Bill was first
introduced to the world of horses
that formed the beginning of a last
ing relationship with this reward
ing business.
Bill went to school at Spring Hill
and began working as a groom at
age seventeen for JACK WARREN.
Bill worked here for about two
years, and gained his first experi
ence breaking colts.
Bill then went to work for HAROLD
WISE and Jack Warren in Lewis
burg, Tennessee. He worked here
for nearly four years and developed
his talent for working with horses.
Bill credits Harold for much of his
early training, and these two men
have developed a lasting friendship
and admiration for each other. Har
old visits Bill often and helps him
whenever possible.
During these hectic years Bill
took time out for a ''walk” down
the aisle. In 1956 he married NAN
CY LEE EMERSON of Lewisburg.
The Crutchers now have two lovely
children: RANDY GENE, eight; and
JANETTE LINDA, five.
After working in Lewisburg with
Harold and Jack, Bill went to Hills
boro, Missouri, to work for LEON
HALL. He later moved closer to
home and went to work for H. C.
BAILEY at Jackson, Mississippi.
During these early years Bill was
connected with some of the top
stock among Tennessee Walking
Horses. He recalls with fondness
that he helped Harold Wise break
Keene’s Go Boy. While at H. C.
Bailey’s, Bill broke one of today’s
top mares, Mighty Sunbeam. He
also started Magic Knight while at
Bailey’s. This horse is presently
being shown by MARJORIE GILL
in amateur classes.
