Jan Wright officially retired the Mary Ellen and Elizabeth Hampton Challenge Trophy in this class as she swept the blue ribbon for the third straight time. Jan is unmatched in riding ability and it is a fine tribute to this dedicated young girl that she is the youngest rider in modern times to retire this trophy. Second place in this class went to Cristie Bennett, while third spot was awarded to Diane Corley. The equitation class has grown rapidly in recent years and this year it attracted 32 skilled entries. M. Waters, Jr. and Spur's Summer Dream were the cream of the crop in this class as they outperformed their 25 competi tors to take the blue ribbon. Mrs. Waters kept her horse in good form, stayed on the rail and showed her horse. Sue's Midnight Doll with Susie Beasley in the saddle perform ed well and tied second with a hard-working effort. The crowd favorite, Lady Godiva, turned in her usual fine performance and grabbed the third place honors for Mrs. Frank Parnell. This class was not as filled as some of the others but nonetheless was well stocked with fine horses and talented riders. Mississippi JUVENILES RIDING WALKING MARES OR GELDINGS This new juvenile class, riders 11-13 in clusive, was won by Brenda Bramlett up on Merry Melinda. Brenda guided her horse to the top spot with a fine effort in all three gaits. Young Judy Tillett, making her first Celebration ride, swept the second place rib bon on The Untouchable. Dark Shadow con tinued his winning ways as he carried Jan Wright to the yellow ribbon. Dark Shadow had previously taken Jan to the equitation title and captured three blue ribbons in last year's show. Though this class is a newcomer to the Celebration it was well liked by the crowd and the 35 entries illustrate its quick popularity with exhibitors.
