THE CAROLINA OPEN GATE by Mary L. Hinson Route 4, Box 186 Sumter, South Carolina Shady Deal Walking Horse Stal des EDITOR’S NOTE—One of the real "hot spots" of the Walking Horse business is the Carolinas, and South Carolina is on the move to increase interest at all levels. It is with great pleasure that we introduce Mrs. C. E. (Mary) Hinson, of Sumter. South Carolina, who becomes a Contributing Editor with this issue. This first article will serve to intro duce Mrs. Hinson and her family to the read ers of the VOICE. She has an extensive background in the Walking Horse business and should do an excellent job of covering her state. All Walking Horse enthusiasts in South Carolina please feel free to call on Mrs. Hinson for coverage and news of your horse activities. She is most willing to assist you by giving you mention in her article. Mary Laney Hinson comes from Camden. South Carolina, home of the famous Carolina Cup Races. Her family has always owned horses and she can remember riding since she was four years old. Among her current activities are teaching kindergarten, working on various church and civic projects, the State PTA and the S. C. Horse Shows As sociation. She is also chairman of three Sumter Horse Shows. In describing ner back ground in the horse business. Mrs. Hinson states: My husband CONNIE and I have been interested in Walking Horses for about ten years. We raise and sell colts. Our first stud was Stately Allen, a well-known stud from Ala bama. We became interested in the Go Boy Shadowbreedingandbought a Shadow stud from Tennessee. Both of these horses sired some of the best colts raised in South Carolina. We opened a 17-stall modern barn in February7 of 1965. Between 900 and 1,000 interested horse lovers and friends attended the grand open ing. Our trainer is Mr. DUDLEY D. SLEDGE, from Murfreesboro, Ten nessee. Dudley has had a terrific show season with two of our top horses: the filly Shadow’s Sumter Queen, and Jet’s Go Boy Souvenir. If nothing happens, he can show South Carolina much better horses next year. Dudley’s successful sea son encouraged his brother, BILLY Sledge, to move to South Carolina to become head trainer for LARRY COOPER at the Circle C in Greer. These Sledge brothers have brought much excitement and horsemanship to South Carolina. Route 3, Box 213 OPELIKA, ALABAMA '•m ieie (jou cj<»t sOlial is comincj [a i|ou’ RAY MILLER JIM BO BRUCE A sst . Saturday was the hottest day of the year and any horse or rider that won a ribbon really deserved it. What a thrill on Saturday night when Merry Boy’s Secret won the second Championship show of the South Carolina season. The other show was Johnston in August. Meriy Boy’s Secret is owned by Mr. and Mrs. GUY WHITNER of Newberry, S. C. Shown by HUGH MOSS, Trenton, S. C., he made a good showing at the Celebration, tying in the money. L UaJUtZnxj/ South Carolina horses are getting better every year. We were really proud of our horses at the Celebra tion. Another horse that tied in the money was Midnight Easter Sun, owned by W. F. BALLENTINE of Columbia, S. C. He was shown by JUDY HENSLEY of Georgia. Judy won the Juvenile Class Saturday on Midnight Easter Sun.
