TARHEEL REVIEW by Elaine and Harold Thacker Rt. 5, Winston-Salem, N. C.
The North Carolina State Championship was held in the Dorton Arena in Raleigh, N. C., on September 22-25. 1965. The Honorable J. H. NOBLIN was the Walking Horse Judge. The show managers were BOB and BILL DILLON.
The Walking Horse Champion for 1965 is April Love. This fine mare, ridden by ALBERT ROWLAND of Lewisburg, Tenn., is owned by Martin’ s Grill Meat Co., Gadsden, Ala.
Mr. DONALD PASCHAL up for Sally Hill Farms of Florence, S. C. and Fayetteville, N. C. rode two fine horses to victory. One was Cindy’ s Shadow, who won the Walking Mare Class, and Eternal Sun won the Walking Stallion and Gelding Class.
RONNIE CLEMENT, Hickory, rode Alvin to victory in the Amateur Walking Stallion and Gelding Class and again in the Walking Horse Amateur Stake. Ronnie also rode Go Boy’ s Nancy to the winners circle in the Amateur Walking Mare Class. Both Alvin and Go Boy’ s Nancy are owned by Clement’ s Stables, Hickory, N. C.
Captain Applejack, a wonderful black gelding, was ridden to victory by Miss BETTY BLOUNT. Fairlane Stables, Bethel, N. C., owns Applejack. The Ladies Walking Class was won by Go Boy’ s Ebony Angel with CANDACE WILLIAMS up. Candace and Ebony Angel have been very successful these past two years. Ebony Angel is owned by the Sally Hill Farms. The State Champion Two-Year-Old is King of the Road. He is owned by Mr. & Mrs. CHARLES BLACK BURN, High Point, N. C., and trained by Mr. KENNY PRICE. The weather was perfect for a horse show and the attendance was GREAT. The arena was filled to the brim both with spectators and horses.
Big moving in North Carolina in brief: Mr. C. A. BOBO has left Thomasville, N. C. to be the trainer and General Manager of GLL Farms.
Mr. KENNY PRICE moved from Northwood Stables to open his own barn. What was once C. A. Bobo and Sons Stables now is Kenny Price Stables. Mr. KENNETH BURK has his own barn in Fayetteville, N. C. Kenneth has been showing very good horses since he has been on his own. The new Fairlane Stables of Bethel, N. C. has a new trainer, Mr. SAM CECIL, JR.
Elaine and I wish all of these trainers the best of
luck in their new barns.
The Concord, N. C. Horse Show was held the first of October.
There was one horse and his get who dominated the whole show. The horse is Midnight Hap. Hap is owned by Dr. EDWARD JONES, Thomasville, N. C. Hap won the Stalljon and Gelding Class and the Championship Stake. Hap’ s Honey Gold won the Three-Year-Old Filly Class.
King of the Road won the Two-Year-Old Championship Class. All of the above horses are trained by Kenny Price. There will be another Hap colt in the show ring next year. His name is Hap ' s Masterpiece. This fine black colt is owned by Mr. and Mrs. KENNETH MY ERS, of Winston-Salem, N. C. Kenny Price will train this colt, too.
VIOLA AND THE TENNESSEE WALKING HORSE " Birthplace and Nursery of Champions”
The above item was brought to our attention during the recent National Celebration. It is part of a collection of pictures and other Walking Horse historical items that are on display at the Walking Horse Inn in Wartrace, Tennessee. A note of special interest at this time is the mention of Midnight Sun as the " current Champion,” which places the time of its origin in 1945 or 1946.
The approach of the horse owner who prepared this for public display was to tie in his homeplace of Viola, Tennessee, with the origin of many famous Tennessee Walking Horses. Notice the reference to " some forty years ago,” which, at the time this picture was made, would place his reference to the early 1900’ s. Specific reference is made to the year 1903 and to a black Standard-bred stud by the name of Allen F-l which, according to the author, made many seasons, along with his noted son Allen F-38, in and around Warren and Coffee Counties. Another item of great interest is the specific reference that, at that time, one-half of the World’ s Champions of the National Celebration were furnished by this community. We refer to Middle Tennessee, and Wartrace especially, as the " cradle of the breed” and this certainly lends credence to this belief.
