KEN DAUGHTREY STABLES
Tennessee Walking Horse activity is on the increase at Ken Daughtrey Stables in Seminary , Mississippi . SONNY HOLT is in full charge of training and SHARP GRANTHAM is manager . Sonny began at Daughtrey ’ s October 1 , and already has fourteen horses in training .
The facilities include : an inside training barn that is 210 feet long , has a 26-foot-wide riding hall , three concrete wash & preparation racks , a tack room , an automatic walker , an office , fifteen 12 x 14 box stalls ( with five more planned for the near future ); a lighted show-size training ring ; and approximately 300 acres of land .
The First Annual Seminary Ruritan Club Horse Show was held at Ken Daughtrey Stables last June 12 , and was proclaimed a great success by everyone who attended it . The Ruritan Club is already making its plans for n ext year ’ s show , with added classes and other improvements over this year ’ s .
Sonny is the first full-time trainer at the stables , and he is doing a fine job . He is especially enjoying and taking advantage of the acres of rolling land for riding horses . He says there is nothing like having plenty of open space for training , so that a horse can be ridden over the hills and valleys for a true workout . We agree !
Horses in training at the present include :
Shadow ’ s Midnight Man , a fiveyear-old bay amateur gelding owned by Mr . and Mrs . OWEN FULTON of Athens , Tennessee ;
McGee ’ s MauGray , a big two-yearold chestnut stallion owned by Mr . and Mrs . JIMMY McGEE of Tylertown , Mississippi ;
Go Boy ' s Golden Slipper , a twoyear-old filly owned by Smith Oil Co . of Mendenhall , Mississippi . This is an outstanding filly that has a natural " big way ” of going . We are sure you ’ ll be hearing much more about her later ;
Merry Boy ’ s Flame is being kept hard at work by Sonny . This aged gelding , also owned by Smith Oil Co ., is improving every day and is expected to be a top stake horse for Sonny ;
Allison ' s Lady Ann , a four-yearold mare owned by Mr . and Mrs . K . W . ALLISON of Mendenhall , is coming on strong and is expected to be a top mare in the near future ; MauGray ’ s Challenger , an aged gelding also owned by Mr . and Mrs . Allison , is a top amateur gelding that Mr . Allison is planning to show ;
Two coming two-year-old colts for Mr . and Mrs . PAUL RAYBORN and Sons of Hattiesburg , Mississippi , appear to be good prospects .
Sonny is also training Rambling Glory Girl , a good comingthree-yearold mare , a coming three-year-old gelding , two coming two-year-olds , and Secret Love , a coming threeyear-old mare for Ken Daughtrey Stables and Sharp Grantham . Also in training for the stables and Mr . Grantham is an outstanding six-year-old mare , Sir Henry ’ s Sunny Girl by Sir Henry Allen outofamare by Midnight Sun . Sonny recently tied eighth in the Mare Class at Mobile with Sunny Girl , and had only been riding her a week before the show . This mare was recently purchased from Mr . W . L . LYNCH of Slidell , Louisiana , and with a little more work she should make a mare that ’ s hard to beat .
Two good stallions are standing at stud at the present time . One is Shine On Go Boy by Merry Go Boy , leased from Mr . GEORGE LIVING STONE of Shelbyville , Tennessee . Also at stud is the stables ’ own stallion , Rambling Glory , by Old Glory out of a mare by Midnight Allen .
Ken Daughtrey Stables has a fine coming three-year-old black stallion named Vic ’ s Black Boy in training with VIC THOMPSONof Shelbyville , Tennessee . This colt has had only four months ’ training and is showing great potential for making a top three-year-old .
JERRY and REID WOODLEE of Hidden View Stables in Hattiesburg , Mississippi , are doing an excellent job of training Mr . Grantham ' s fine mare , Rebel ’ s Red Angel . Rebel has brought home 35 ribbons ( the greater majority being blues and reds ) this show season in Amateur , Mare and Stake Classes , with Mr . Grantham up in Amateur classes and Jerry riding in Mare and Stake classes . Rebel continues to improve each year she is shown .
Miss LYDIA SHOWS of Collins , Mississippi , has a top nine-monthold filly by Go Boy ’ s Shadow out of a Midnight Sun mare . She recently bought the filly from Mr . HOOD of Ellisville , Mississippi . Lydia started showing Walking Horses early this year and is doing a tremendous job .
If you ’ re near Seminary ( it ’ s 20 miles north of Hattiesburg , just off U S Highway 49 ), visit the Ken Daughtrey Stables . They ’ d be glad to show you around .
