BAMA BI-LINE
Horse show time is back again!! It started off in a big way with the Second Annual Morgan County ' Sheriffs Mounted Posse Horse Show on April 10 in Hartselle, Alabama. The show was held in Sherrill Stadium, which was filled to capacity. J. H. NOBLIN did a fine judging job, judging a total of nine Walking Horse classes. Mrs. BILL ROBERTS, Show Secretary, reported a total of 300 class entries with approximately half of these being Walking Horses. The two-year-old class was filled with 19 good horses, the winner being Riptide, with RUSSELL PATE up for the GLL Farms. Riptide is one ofthe finest two-year-olds I have ever seen. He walks like a champion and also looks like one. The Junior Walking Horses had a class of 20. HERSHEL TALLEY carried home the blue ribbon in this eventwith Clown’ s Easter Lady. What an Amateur Class they had! Twenty-five top amateur-horses but Moonglow, Jr. with JAMES K. TAYLOR up wras in his usual good form and won the trophy and the blue ribbon. I was relieved to see that Moonglow, Jr.’ s injury in Florida was not serious. The Walking Horse Championship was a thrilling class, but Duke’ s Handy Man with Talley up won out and the beautiful horseshoe of red and white carnations was placed around his neck. Shadows No Man with JACK DARNELL up tied second. This is a beautiful animal and is owned by Mr. H. C. ALLEN in Fayetteville, Tennessee. GEORGE WITT made his usual good ride on Spurs Big Glory and tied third.
To make a good show even better, Carbon Copy was on exhibition. He is truly a beautiful horse and I don’ t think I shall ever see him perform enough. Mr. GEORGE LEE LENOX, his owner, put him through all of his gaits for the thrilled crowd.
As you can see, it was an exceptional show and as we left the exhibitors’ area that night a bigger and better one was promised for next year.( Complete results appear in the " Horse Show Results” column, elsewhere in this magazine.)
On April 24 I attended the Heart of the Heart of Dixie Horse Show in Columbiana, Alabama. This was their second annual show and was a repeat of the successful show they had last year. Mr. J. H. NOBLIN judged the Walking Horses and did a good job again. The Walking Stallion and Gelding Class was the most exciting of the show with Duke’ s Handy Man with Talley up winning, and close second being Confederate Air, a gelding ridden by DIXIE WEAVER and owned by Mr. STEW ART OSWALT of Tuscaloosa.
Horse activity here in Tuscaloosa is steadily growing and it does my heart good to see all of the new Walking Horses in our area. LLOYD WOOD has just recently opened his own stables and is stocking his barn with some good horses. I hope to report more in detail on his operation next month. Dixie Weaver, at the Tuscaloosa Riding Club, has a barn full of good horses this year. He has several promising two-year-olds, one of the best being a sorrel bald-faced stallion. Sabre’ s Rocket, owned by Dr. LLOYD SMITH of Beaumont, Texas. He won the blue at Columbiana the other night and Dixie is off to the Beaumont, Texas show with him this week.
Another good horse that Dixie has for one of our local owners is Go Boys China Doll, owned by Mr. JOE JOB- SON of Northport. She is a beautiful sorrel mare by Merry Go Boy out ol a full sister to Rodger’ s Perfection, and Dixie says to watch out when he brings her into the aged mare class. Mr. Jobson’ s daughter ANN is becoming one of the state’ s best equitation riders and also never fails to bring home a blue ribbon with her Walking Pleasure Horse, Rowdy’ s Rambler. Another aged mare that Dixie has been showing for some time is Colorado Ann, owned by Dr. J. T. BROWN of Loveman, Colorado. She i s big, fat and ready for the shows this year.
We visited Hershel Talley’ s barn last week and he has a string of good two-year-olds. Most of them are by Spurs Clown, the great horse that
Hershel showed so much in Alabama. Spurs Clown is now standing at Mr. B. W. COLEMAN’ S farm in Greensboro, and from some of his colts I have seen I think he is going to be a great breeder. One of his best twoyear-olds is Clown’ s Miss Lib owned by JACK COLLINS of Bessemer. She is a natural! Look for her this year in the show ring. Talley is working Spurs Merry Maid for my husband and she hits a big lick when she is right. His junior horse Clown’ s Spur Again is terrific this year. You will remember him as the two-yearold stud that won his class in Mobile and Montgomery last year.
I want to remind all of you folks about the Junior Welfare Charity Horse Show in Tuscaloosa on June 18-19. Mrs. LEON PATTENisgeneral chairman this year and she has added some additional walking classes so I hope everyone will make up their minds to attend and mail their entries in early. If you have not received a premium list let me know, and I will be pleased to send you one right away.
I have lots more news, but I’ m off to Beaumont too, so I’ ll have to save it for next month. Let me hear from all you horse folks and horse shows in South Alabama.

More and more people in our state are becoming Walking Horse conscious and interested. That’ s why we are starting to breed them, and the best, with the finest bloodlines. We hope to add more brood mares in the future, and to get more and more Wisconsonites to try them for, as with us, once you do you are satisfied with no other kind of horse! The first show of the Wisconsin Circuit will be in Madison, the middle of May. The big Milwaukee Spring Horse Show is scheduled for June 3, 4, 5 and 6. It will be better than ever with the most efficient group of people running it. St. Joseph’ s Hospital will be the charity to whom proceeds will go. The kick-off dinner is Sunday March 21, but all plans and arrangements are set. The advance ticket sale will begin with almost all box seats already sold out. More on this after the meeting.” Sincerely, Jean S.( Mrs. Leo) Baum River Tree Stock Farm,
