DOUBLE B STABLES
Word comes from Mr. and Mrs. RICHARD BARRINGTON, of Columbus, Georgia, thattheirnewtrainer HAROLD WINKLER is doing an excellent job. Harold came to work for the Double B several months ago and is in the process of building up a stable of pretty good horses. He trained for the Robinson-Dedman Stables of Chatsworth, Georgia before coming here. They have 21 horses in training, including Go Boy’ s Step Child, a black stud colt with top prospects. The Barringtons own him as well as Sun’ s Saber King, a two-year-old sorrel stud colt; Wilson’ s Ace, an Amateur gelding shown by BETH Barrington; Mack K Dollie, a Junior mare also shown by Beth; and Mack K’ s Dandy, a six-year-old bay gelding shown by CHUCK Barrington.
Outside horses include: Go Boy’ s Devil, an Amateur horse owned by LAWRENCE HATHAWAY of Phenix, Alabama; Go Boy’ s Copy, a twoyear-old stud colt owned by JOHN MAYER, who also owns a good twoyear-old Sun Dust Filly. JANE DYKES of Columbus has a good Amatuer horse named Go Boy’ s Patty that is a beautiful black mare, and EVAN BYNUM has Go Boy’ s Lady ', a pony mare that will be shown in Walking Pony Classes. JACK TATUM of Opelika, Alabama also has Go Boy’ s Julia, a four-yearold sorrel mare, in training. We will probably hear a lot about the Double B Stables throughout the summer.
MARTIN’ S BREEDING FARM
Mr. and Mrs. HARRY MARTIN of East Gadsden, Alabama, owners of the top mare April Love in training with ALBERT LEE ROWLAND, also have a nice Walking Horse operation going at home. Their trainer, RANDY ROWLAND, talented and experienced young sonofAlbert Lee, is their trainer and is doing quite w’ ell. Mr. and Mrs. JACK LEE of Gadsden also have an interest in the stable operation and participate
in their activities.
Randy is currently working eleven horses, including the Martins’ Mr. Ruff, the 1964 World’ s Champion Three-Year-Old Gelding. So far this season he has been getting along very well with this fancy, big-going black gelding. He is also working three Junior horses and several twoyear-olds. In the Amateur ranks, the Martin Stables will have Lady Orchid, a roan mare owned and shown by Mr. Martin, plus several other prospects that are coming along quite well.
RED BRIDGE STABLES
A recent letter from Dr. RALPH E. BANEY, owner of the Red Bridge Stables in Kansas City, Missouri, indicates that things are on the move there. A notable personality at the recent Murray Farm Sale, Dr. Baney purchased some of the finest stock on the sale grounds, including Ebony’ s Black Lady and Go Boy’ s Crusader. Both horses will be used extensively for horse show competition. Emphasizing that breeding was still their major activity, Dr. Baney pointed out that Head Trainer and Stable Supervisor RAY GREEN will be working several good twoyear-olds for competition, including Son’ s Tim Tam and Mystery’ s Angel. At the stallion level, Red Bridge Stables features the renowned Midnight Secret. He is backed up by Go Boy’ s Crusader, Merry Boy Allan, Merry Jack, and two Midnight Sim stallions named Curfew Boy and Sun Dust Victor. They are also breeding a large number of their top brood mares to World Champion stallions outside their own stable— Carbon Copy, Go Boy’ s Shadow, Midnight Sun, Merry Go Boy, Rodger’ s Perfection, etc.
The selection of choice brood mares at the Murray Farm Sale was to broaden their blood lines. Dr. Baney maintains that, with the more than 170 brood mares they now have, they can produce desirable crosses in their own stable.
WALK-AWAY STABLES
A new 18-stall stable is now under way near Manchester, Tennessee. Mr. JOE GETSAY is owner of the new operation, and Mr. JUNIOR STACY, formerly with Green and Hugh Stables, is trainer. The new barn is filling up about as fast as they finish stalls and at the present they have ten horses in training. Outstanding right now is Sensation’ s Reflection, a four-year-old sorrel roan mare owned by RUFUS CASH- ION. This mare tied fifth in the recent Manchester show in a top class. Shadow’ s Flame, a three-year-old black stud colt owned by Joe Getsay, is doing quite well, as is Wyatt’ s Merry Boy, a Junior stud owned by H. A. WYATT. Mr. R. J. MYER of St. Louis, Missouri, is proud of his Go Boy’ s Fair Lady, a Junior mare with a lot of promise.
In the two-year-old class, " RED” STACY will have a black Mack K filly belonging to ERNEST SMITH, a black Piddley filly owned by A. D. KILLINGSWORTH, and a half-brother to Chimney Sweep that is owned by WILLIAM ARNOLD, FRANK STACY and JOE GETSAY.
Mr. MARK BICKNELL of Clay, Michigan has a blue roan Junior mare in training and Mr. J. B. BAR TON and CHARLIE LOWERY of Manchester have a three-year-old sorrel mare, Ebony’ s Magic Maid, that they are very pleased with.
JAY’ S STABLES
Cleveland, Tennessee, long-time home of many good Tennessee Walking Horses, now harbors another stable. Mr. BOYD MELTON and Mr. GENE JOHNSTON are in the process of constructing a new 12-stall stable on the Old Tunnel Hill Road and should be in operation soon. Named Jay’ s Stables, they now have six horses in training, including three two-year-old colts, an age mare, an age stud and a Walking Pony. They are taking outside horses, so any of you folks near Cleveland who have been looking for help with your Walking Horses will find this a good spot.
JEFFCOAT STABLES
NEIL ROBINSON, trainer for the Jeffcoat Stables of Cordova, Tennessee, sends us word about their upand-coming operation. Working hard for owners Mr. and Mrs. JOHN JEFF COAT, Neil is putting in a good day’ s work with 22 horses in training. Since his start as trainer of the 1963 World’ s Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding, Neil has made his way with some pretty good horses. At the present he has a good two-year-old roan gelding named Southern Aires Rebel, owned by the Jeffcoats, that is doing quite well. Midnight Mona Lisa, a black two-year-old filly, is also attracting a lot of attention and should come on strong in her class. Mr. CURTIS WADDELL of Brownsville, Tennessee, has a Junior Sun-
