( Continued from page 28 )
Of the thirteen horses that are being worked at the Puckett Stables , Go Boy ’ s High Mack is perhaps the headliner . This outstanding amateur horse , trained and ridden by PAT Puckett , is truly one of the nation ’ s finest . He hits a big graceful lick and doesn ’ t know the word " quit .” Watch for him " all over ” this year . Other horses carrying the Puckett banner this year are : Shadow ’ s Sweetheart , a four-year-old bay mare with a real show-mare gait ; Invasion ’ s Go Boy , a four-year-old blue roan gelding that is coming on strong ; Piddley ’ s Maude , a three-year-old chestnut mare owned by JOHN CHANCY ; a two-year-old Gunsmoke colt named Prince Albert , owned by Mrs . FRED SHIVERS ; and the famous Go Boy ’ s Star Dust , Pat Puckett ’ s Juvenile horse .
Gary Edwards will be showing some of the Puckett Stable stock this year and Midnight Old Glory , a fouryear-old bay , will probably see a lot of action . This horse has a tremendous stride and can get yonder with ease . Young BABS TAFT , daughter of Captain ROBERT TAFT of Shellman , will be showing her horses Shadow and White Cloud in the Juvenile Classes . Mrs . SAM CAROLL of Ozark , Alabama also has two horses in training here with Gary Edwards , and ROBERT WIGGINGS of Cuthbert , Georgia has his Sun ’ s Midnight Blues being worked at the Puckett Stables . When they get Gary out of school for the summer and get Pat off the ball diamond , chances are we will see a lot of action from Shellman , Georgia in the Walking Horse shows this year .
STANFIELD STABLES
A recent letter from JERRY DER- RYBERRY gave us a good run-down on the Stanfield Stables , Creedmoor , North Carolina . His letter read as follows : " I would like to inform the horse world that I have recently left Kingston , Tennessee to take the position of Manager and Trainer for the Stanfield Show Stables in Creedmoor , North Carolina . At the present time I have 18 horses in training with a good crop of two-year-olds , two of which were sent from Tennessee with me . Mr . S . J . SHIPW ASH of Kingston is the proud owner of a black filly by Shadow and out of a Society Man mare that is really doing well . This filly has a bold way of going and is getting stronger and better each day . The other colt is owned by Mr . R . S . JACKSON of Oak Ridge , Tennessee and , with a few months ’ work , will be ready .
Mr . O . B . STANFIELD , owner of the stable , has four horses in training at this time . Sun ’ s Miss America , with which Mr . Stanfield is especially pleased , is a three-year-old blue roan mare that tied second at the Little Celebration in Raleigh last year . This mare has taken the canter well and is improving fast . Talks Return , a nine-year-old bay stud who is a full brother to Talk of the Town , is in better shape than ever and is a top contender for Amateur classes . This horse also has some fine colts , all of which have plenty of motion and a natural way of going . Another bay stud by Setting Sun , coming five this year , will be ready for the stud classes . Midnight Sun B , injured in a training accident two years ago , is being slowly put back to work and is going fine so far . This horse topped the Harlinsdale Sale in 1962 and was undefeated as a two-year-old . We all hope to see him in the ring once more .
Mrs . Stanfield is very pleased with her mare , Fascination . This buckskin mare is getting back in shape and will be ready for the aged mare classes this season . I believe people who are familiar with this mare will see quite a bit of improvement in her this season .
Mr . R . L . PERRY of South Mil ] and Mr . C . L . McPHIERSON of Elizabeth City have a fine two-year-old roan filly that is doing well . This big filly has lots of lick with plenty of speed and should get along in the colt classes this season . They also have a sorrel filly that shows plenty of promise and another sorrel filly we have just started that looks as good as any colt . She should be ready by late this season . Mr . S . Y . HAR GROVE of Durham has a nice bay colt by Midnight Joe G and out of a Gold Bond mare that has conformation , a way of doing and the desire that is hard to beat . Another filly colt owned by Mr . JAMES HUGHES of Henderson is improving every day and Mr . SAM UPCHURCH of Raleigh has a four-year-old chestnut mare that will be ready for the Amateur and age mare classes this season . Paradin Papa by JetParade is a six-year-old bay stud that is big and strong enough to stand the large shows is doing well . He is owned by Mr . BOB WATSON of South Mill , Virginia . From Beaseley , Virginia we have a sorrel filly , and Mr . MOSE- LY is looking forward to seeing this filly progress . For the ladies and amateur classes we have a five-yearold sorrel gelding that is broke to death and doing well . This gelding and a roan filly colt that we have just started belong to Miss MARY PHEETERS of Frankfurt , Germany .
We here at Stanfield Stables want people to know we have horses for sale and all visitors are welcome at any time . Come see us .”
LAKESIDE FARMS
From Asheburn , North Carolina , comes word from Mr . J . S . HIGHT that they are building a new Walking Horse stable at the Lakeside Farms . Their new stable will have 15 stalls and they are working to get some more horses by the time the stable is complete . At the present they have several good horses , including Shadow ’ s Sam Spade , that should help them to get off to a good start this season . They will concentrate on both breeding and training of Tennessee Walking Horses .
MIDNIGHT OAKS CLOSES
The Midnight Oaks Stud Farm , Shelbyville , Tennessee , formerly owned and operated by Mr . NAT GOODWIN and Mr . SAM RAMSEY is officially out of business , according to their lawyer , HOYT E . ADAMS , JR ., of Shelbyville . The VOICE has received many letters from readers who have had dealings with this operation and we would like to publicly state that we are indeed sorry that such an operation was started in good faith and ended up in such disrepute . It is our understanding that the commonly accepted " honest ” approach to the horse business was used in many instances to the distinct advantage of the Midnight Oaks representative and that the reputation of all " Middle Tennessee Walking Horse businessmen ” was dealt a foul blow by these people . It is a sad thing when a rather simple horse operation , especially one with three such outstanding horses as Sun ’ s Go Boy , Go Boy ’ s Cheerleader and Happy Days K , can ’ t make ago of it in the Walking Horse business , simply because of mismanagement .
