WISCONSIN WALKS Jean S. (Mrs. Leo)Baum River Tree Stock Farm, Incorporated Box 250 Ixonia, Wisconsin 53036 On a stormy night in Madison, Wisconsin, amidst the mud-surrounded new bams in the rebuilding of the Dane County Fairgrounds, the first show of the Wisconsin Circuit was held. The dates were May 14, 15, and 16. The new indoor arena will be completed by next year, and it was a lucky thing they had the old one, as the second night of the show would have been rained out otherwise. The new barns were as fine as could be. The thun der and lightning and pounding of rain on the new metal roofs spooked the horses a bit, as did the high winds — it was not possible to warm them up. In spite of everything, three good Walking Horse classes were held, the last one ending up in sunshine. It might be a good idea to explain right here that, in Wisconsin and Illinois shows, there are only three Walking Horse Classes: Junior, Amateur, and Open. The newly-formed Wisconsin Walking Horse Associ ation hopes to enlarge on this situation, and add more classes (more on this later). SHOW RESULTS MADISON: JUNIOR CLASS — (1) That pretty black good-going Shadow mare, Shadow’s Mardelle, owned and ridden by MARVIN SHIELDS; (2) Colonel Pat’s Bugler, the pride and joy of Waldor Farms, owned by WALTER PIEPER, MARV ORTMANN up. AMATEUR CLASS - (1) The well moving bay stal lion, Caramine Mandate, owned and ridden by Mrs. R. C. OUDENHOVEN; (2) Ledgeview’s Evening Cloud, owned by Ledgeview Acres, shown by RONALD SAD- OFF; (3) Shep’s Surprise King, owned and shown by the ever-popular RAY NELSON; (4) Beau K’s Mid night Sun, owned and shown by POLLY KRANICK; and (5) Stormy Mo, shown by CLINTON LOOS, owned by VERNON LOOS. OPEN CLASS — (1) Winning the class with a big lick, Stormy Mo; (2) Caramine Mandate; (3) Storm Warning, owned by RICHARD WRIGHT, ROSS DRAKE up; (4) Daring Lady, owned and shown by KAREN KUPHAL; and (5) Dictator Again, owned and shown by PHILLIP KRUEGER. MILWAUKEE SPRING HORSE SHOW, June 3 - 6: JUNIOR CLASS — (1) Shadow’s Mardelle, going bet ter than ever, shown by her proud owner MARVIN SHIELDS; (2) Colonel Pat’s Bugler, shown by MARV ORTMANN for WALTER PIEPER; (3) Lucky Boy, the new Junior stallion of Mr. and Mrs. TODD VAN KEU- REN, Todd Van Keuren up. AMATEUR CLASS — (1) Sun Dust Fury, owned by Mary Mount Farms, shown by RAYMOND SMITH; (2) Beau K’s Midnight Sun, well ridden by happy owner Polly Kranick; (3) Caramine Mandate, owned and shown by Mrs. R. C. OUDENHOVEN; (4) Dictator Again, shown by owner PHILLIP KRUEGER; (5) Huston’s Trouble, a black horse owned and ridden by L. J. HUSTON. 44 OPEN CLASS — (1) Once again, that good-going horse with the big lick from Renssler, Indiana, Sun Dust Fury; (2) Caramine Mandate; (3) Shadow’s Mardelle; (4) Dictator Again; and (5) Huston’s Trouble. The Wisconsin Walking Horse Association really is off the ground. There have been three Board of Direc tors’ meetings, and the second general meeting was again held at the Monticello Tennis Club in Jackson, Wisconsin, preceded by cocktails and dinner. There was a good and interested group. By-laws were pre sented and duly passed, new members were taken in, and many points of business were discussed. There will be an intra-club show August 8th and a trail ride, probably in September when it is so beautiful around these parts. Afterwards the film of the 1964 Celebra tion was show, commented on bythoseofus who atten ded the Celebration, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. We are going to promote Walking Horse classes at every show, and will do our best to see that they are filled. Many of the members own Pleasure Walkers, so we hope to add a pleasure class to many shows, and gradually add juvenile, ladies, and others. The next meeting is scheduled for July 2. JUST IN: From the Janesville show, held June 11-12, the winner in the Junior: Lucky Boy, owned and shown by TODD VAN KEUREN; Amateur: Dictator Again, PHIL KRUEGER up. More on this show next time. Any news from you people in Wisconsin or Northern Illinois will be most welcome. Just send to me at Rivertree Farm, Route 1, Ixonia, Wisconsin 53036. AT LAST . . .
