AMERICAN WALKING HORSE ASSOCIATION TAKES STRIDES TOWARD A BIGGER AND BETTER FUTURE FOR THE BREED
With the 14th Annual Walking Horse School fresh in their minds , the American Walking Horse Association , led by a new slate of officers , has taken aim toward the advancement of the Tennessee Walking Horse in a way that is refreshing indeed . At a time when we are under fire from many angles , both from within our ranks and from without , it is encouraging to learn that there are those among us who are dedfcated to the breed at large as opposed to their own personal advancement and gain . We present herewith a " Statement of Policy ” from Mr . E . CARL HENGEN , new president of the A . W . H . A ., speaking for the other officers and the membership at large :
" On the letterhead of this association , it states that we are " An International Organization Dedicated to the Promotion of the Tennessee Walking Horse . " The policy of this administration is just this , exactly this and only this in the fullest sense and meaning of these words .
" I do not delude myself into thinking that the carrying out of this policy will be as easy as the mere statement of it , however this should be our goal and if we are willing to work at it hard enough , certainly it can be attained .
" One of the best ways to start is by improving our public image . Unfortunately there are those who would tear us down . Some for sensationalism , some for their own ends , some through ignorance and some for just plain jealousy . For whatever reasons , these or otherwise , they will not be convinced by your words . Please do not give information to those who would tear us down ; rather let all requests for information for publication be referred to your association . Meanwhile , let us show our horses in a manner that will please the public , make the show committee glad we are there and reflect credit on the Walking Horse world . In this regard I specifically refer to our attitude as exhibitors . This is a sport and if it is , then we are sportsmen , and if we are sportsmen , then we are in this thing not only for the exhiliration of the competition but for the pure pleasure and enjoyment of the sport and the fellowship of our friends in it .
If it is to be really worth doing it has to be fun and if it is fun it will ultimately attract many newcomers to the sport and capture the imagination of the public . " This thing has many facets and accordingly , I hope to meet very shortly with our officers and directors to map out our new program . In the meantime , this newsletter has been instituted that we may more readily be in touch with all of our members and that they may be constantly informed of our progress and aware of our efforts . It is hoped that we may be able to include reports of events and items of information and interest to our membership .
" We must remember however , that we can accomplish our purposes only if we have a strong , healthy and live organization in which everyone contributes something and gets something in return . You may be called upon to perform some specific service , but if not , you may start by promoting the American Walking Horse Association in particular and walking horses in general . I promise you will receive full measure in return . E . CARL HENGEN President ”
ITEM OF INTEREST TO ALL STABLE OWNERS AND TRAINERS
As most of you know , the VOICE has been wellreceived by most in the Tennessee Walking Horse business since new management took over the reins in August of 1963 . Our major problems have been many and your patience and indulgence has been greatly appreciated by all concerned . Our biggest problem , as our volume of mail clearly indicated , has been our difficulty in getting the magazine out on time . We have been running about two weeks late on almost every issue .
We have inaugurated a drastic change in our production set-up with this issue , and our intent and purpose is to stick to the deadlines which we have set up . Please make note of the following deadlines — which will be printed in the magazine every month :
