ROSSVILLE KIWANIS CLUB HORSE SHOW ADDS STIMULUS TO AREA WALKING HORSE ACTIVITIES A large and enthusiastic crowd, the beautiful music of JIMMY RICHARDSON, and a talent-laden Walking Horse field combined to make the Fourth Annual Rossville Horse Show a big success. The show, sponsored by the Rossville Kiwanis Club, was well organized and well presented. Honorable BUDDY KIRBY of Madison, Alabama turned in a fine job in judging the show, which had several ex tremely close classes. Master of Ceremonies GEORGE HULL and Ringmaster BILL OWNBY are to be con gratulated for a fine job in keeping the show moving and avoiding time-consuming delays. The show itself had a number of skilled and popular trainers.up on some real good Walking Horse stock. WINK GROOVER from Etowah, Tennessee had the best night, as he carted off two first places in addition to three yellow ribbons. BUDDY HUGH from Green- Hugh Stables in Shelbyville was a close second in ribbon-wearing as he walked to two first place ribbons plus a third-place spot. Battleground Stables from nearby Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia was much in evi dence — BILLY BRANTLEY captured a first, sec ond, and third place to round out a very successful night. The first Walking Horse class was Pleasure Walking Horses and, although there were only three entries, they got the crowd into a lively mood. Mr. Imperial with FORREST CATE, JR. in the saddle took the blue for owners Mr. and Mrs. FORREST CATE, JR. BONNIE FISKE walked Blue Blaze to the red ribbon for G. W. FISKE, while Mr. JOHN TILLOTSON’s Mac K’s Diamond with ELIOT GINN up copped the number three spot. Two-Year-Old Walking Horses, the champions of the future, put on quite a show in one of the best-received classes of the night. When BILLY BRANTLEY on Shot’s T Bird for Mr. and Mrs. BILLY JOE ROBINSON hit the gate, the crowd really sat up and took notice. The promising young colt put on a dazzling display with a big lick and a big heart to match. The battle for the blue was quickly decided when Judge KIRBY called for the running walk and the big bay horse took the coveted top spot on the judge’s card and in the crowd’s heart. Glory Bound with owner STEVE COLE up is bound for glory, as he shows unusual poise and confidence for a two-year-old. This winner of the red is a horse to watch in future shows. Third spot was awarded to WINK GROOVER on Go Boy’s Red Warrior owned by Mr. and Mrs. JAMES GORDON. The Junior Walking Horse class will long be remem bered by those who were privileged to see it. Shadow’s King Cotton with BUDDY HUGH in the saddle for Mr. and Mrs. DEWEY ARNOLD and Dr. and Mrs. E. B. SLIGER’s Setting Sun’s Apollo with BILLY BRANT LEY up staged a red-hot battle for the blue. Judge Kirby called for a workout between these two, and what a workout it was! An obvious battle of speed versus perfection, the deciding factor proved to be speed as Hugh’s white horse showed his heels and captured the honors. Apollo, the 1964 World’s Cham July, 1965 pion Two-Year-Old Walking Horse, came in second, while Wink Groover guided Gunsmoke’s Jose to the yellow ribbon for Mr. and Mrs. R. M. WATTS. The Walking Stallions and Geldings class had only five entrants, but what it lacked in quantity it more than made up in quality. Sundust Sputnik with Wink Groover up for SPENCER WALKER took the blue ribbon in a hard-working performance. RAY TEN- PENNY rode Mr. and Mrs. C. B. McMULLIN’s Sir Henry’s Big Mac to the runner-up spot, while third position went to Red Bomber with Buddy Hugh up for Mr. and Mrs. LEO A. BAUM. Walking Horses with Amateurs to Ride is always a popular class and this one proved to be no exception. Owner-rider MURIEL ANN BRINKLEY walked her Chances Gipsie. Son to the top honors over Lagoon’s Son, owned and ridden by W. F. SULLIVAN. Taking the yellow ribbon was VIRGINIA RAY on Go Boy’s Bright Sun for Mr. and Mrs. W. L. RAY. Jet’s Rocket, 1964 World’s Champion Junior Mare ridden by Wink Groover for Mrs. LYLE CASHION, sped to the top of the Walking Mare class and took the blue with a strong performance in all three gaits. CAROLYN STANSBERRY guided Mrs. JAMES MC GINNIS’ Midnight Sally Rand to the second spot in a close decision. Shadow’s Wind Song with Billy Brantley riding for MRS. L. O. LEDFORD came in third and showed real class in a good effort. The Walking Horse Championship was a fitting cli max to an excellent show.
